When the engine starts and doesn't find the models.cached file in the correct place it will read all the .mdl files to rebuild the models.cached file. If even one of these is not in the correct format, this will fail and engine will crash. This is likely your issue.

If you post the .mdl file I can have a look at it.

Tried again and same result.

Let's just leave it as I am clearly doing something pitifully and stupidly wrong and to find it will only expose me to public ridicule.

Just be grateful I am not coding avionics for Boeing. :)

... a learning experience. Never give up so easily.

Besides, if we see what you did wrong in the .mdl file, maybe we'll both learn something. :)

+1

I am also itching to get to the bottom of this, probably because I was so cavalier in encouraging you to do it.

you could try modding directly into the cache file. Open it as a .csv pref using open office not excel make changes and save as its current name. The main cost to doing this is that it will be overwritten every time you patch the game but it might allow you to see where the problem lies.

I used to do this for AACW 1, and I know it worked there. Actually, the one hang-up preventing me from getting CW2 was I heard you couldn't do just this, or at least nobody had cracked it yet. My uncle and I have played probably a dozen or so games of AACW over the years, clear back when they were still patching it. Anybody else remember when all the cavalry had the skirmisher trait? Anyway, we had our own house rules on drafting and changing the retreat rule back to 5% (is that in the new game?), but we also had a list of changes for various generals. The big two were lowering Grant's seniority so it took a while to get him an army command, and then changing McClellan's stats making the early game in the east more mobile.

I believe we changed him to 2-3-0, with traits like Over Cautious and Charismatic. He turned into a useful punching bag, just good enough that the Union player would put him in command of an army rather than one of the 2-0-1 stiffs, but that tasty 0 defense rating meant the Southerner was just begging for a shot at him outside of his trenches in the open, where Lee and Jackson could run him over and flatten the AoP.
