Trench Level Transformation

From the manual, page 26:
Trenches
"…Levels 5-8 can only be achieved if there is artillery present in the
region…"

What happens if I have a Level 5-8 trench and then remove the artillery?
Will the trench level step down then?

If I remember rightly, if a force entrenches above lvl 4, the only thing that benefits from higher levels is cannons or arty (they do more damage), this is how it is in AACW and CW2 AFAIK...

So taking them out of your entrenched units will just remove your guns enhanced firepower, once taken out they will only do there normal damage...so its advisable to keep in there
