Experience for admirals

How do they gain experience? I destroyed two Union brigs in a sea battle and got no stars. Also I experienced a loopisided naval battle where Buchanan fleet fought some Union fleet around Norfolk. There were 11 battles in one turn. I lost 3, won 4 and there were 3 stalemates. Still, neither Buchanan nor his ships earned any stars. What should I do to gain experience for ships and fleet commanders?

destroying 2 brigs and not gaining a star is rather normal... As for the rest the new version will have some tweaks on that, units and leaders will gain some experience just by participating or damaging units, and not only by destroying units.
