Navy unit names

Wed Apr 16, 2014 2:57 pm

I’m not sure where to post this: here, history, or modding. I’m interested in adding more unit names (as flavor) to the game. I’ve started a discussion in the modding forum about the larger project, and following are notes about proposed names for Naval units.

It turns out that there are a lot of naval units that can be recruited. 600 total Union blockade squadron ships are possible to build, 275 names exist, so, wow. I'm only going to worry about the ironclads and monitors. The number of confederate Ironclad names are sufficient. One issue is that recruitment is by state and some states have extra, so some moving around is needed.

US Monitors
9 are needed. Here is the list so far:
USS Monitor|USS Passaic|USS Catskill|USS Montauk|USS Roanoke|USS Onondaga|USS Puritan|USS Dictator|USS Miantonomoh|USS Nantucket|USS Weehawken|USS Canonicus|USS Sanganon|USS Patapsco|USS Nahant|USS Monadnock|USS Saugus|USS Tecumseh|USS Manhattan|USS Agamenticus|USS Lehigh|USS Nabuc|USS Moduc|USS Casco|USS Chimo|USS Squando|USS Suncook|USS Nausett|USS Shawnee|USS Napa|USS Tunxis|USS Tonawanda|USS Yazoo|USS Camanche|USS Mahopac|USS Koka|USS Wassuc|USS Passaconaway|USS Tippecanoe|USS Waxsaw

We can add 9 monitors which were not completed at the end of the war: |USS Sangamon|USS Cohoes|USS Etlah|USS Klamath|USS Modoc|USS Naubuc|USS Shiloh|USS Umpqua|USS Yuma

We also will move 3 more of the above to river ironclads (|USS Wyandotte|USS Louisville|USS St. Louis), so these 3 unfinished Kalamazoo class monitors can be added: |USS Kalamazoo|USS Quinsigamond|USS Shakamaxon

US River Ironclads
10 names are needed. Here is the list so far:

USS Cairo|USS Carondelet|USS Mound City|USS Cincinnati|USS Pittsburg|USS Baron de Kalb|USS Essex|USS Benton|USS Indianola|USS Chillicothe|USS Eastport|USS Ajax|USS Catawba|USS Lafayette|USS Choctaw|USS Tuscumbia|USS Neosho|USS Osage|USS Oneota|USS Winnebago|USS Ozark|USS Chickasaw|USS Kickapoo|USS Milwaukee|USS Marietta|USS Sandusky|USS Etlah|USS Klamath|USS Umpqua|USS Yuma|USS Shiloh|USS Cyclops

We can take 3 Monitors from above that saw a lot of river duty: |USS Wyandotte|USS Louisville|USS St. Louis

Note that the USS St. Louis was renamed the Baron de Kalb, so we might drop the USS St. Louis.

Add 3 more Monitors saw a lot of river duty:|USS Montauk|USS Sangamon|USS Lehigh

4 are missing, so we could leave these unnamed or be creative. One option is to use the names of 4 monitors built well after the war were named: Arkansas, Nevada, Florida, Wyoming

Another is that we could go with the first 2 commanders of the Mississippi Fleet and the first 2 commanders of the Potamac Flotilla: Rogers, Foote, Ward, and Craven.

Let me know what you think. Also, if you want to take on naval unit names and want me to send my notes, let me know.

As some of those appear as Confederate ironclads, there might be a better way to fill out the list. The historical names came from Indian cultures, Mid-Western cities, foreign Revolutionary figures, and classical mythology. Based on that you could add Thaddeus Kosciuszko and other Revolutionary War figures. Rivers are a good place to look for native names. One of the volumes of The Civil War: Strange and Fascinating Facts has an entire section on ship names (many were flowers).

Good idea. My thought is that someone playing the game should be able to look up most units in the game and see what the unit really did (the exception being numbered infantry and militia which may have numbers that go too high). Another option would be to take a few timberclad names (there are plenty).

Here are the timberclad names, the force pool is 20:
USS New Era|USS Conestoga|USS Lexington|USS Tyler|USS Black Hawk|USS Lavinia Logan|USS Fairy|USS Ivy|USS Queen of the West|USS Monarch|USS Lioness|USS Fulton|USS Mingo|USS Switzerland|USS Samson|USS TD Horner|USS Prairie Bird|USS Hyacinth|USS Thistle|USS Forest Rose|USS Juliet|USS Glide|USS Petrel|USS Huntress|USS Marmora|USS Exchange|USS Springfield|USS Abraham|USS Key West|USS Little Rebel|USS Brillant|USS General Burnside|General Bragg|General Pillow|General Price|USS Rattler|USS Alfred Robb|USS Barataria|USS Colonel Kinsman|USS Cricket|USS Silver Cloud|USS Signal|USS Curlew|USS Fawn|USS Silver Lake|USS St Clair|USS Cimarron|USS Ida|USS Volunteer|USS USS Champion|USS USS Peosta|USS Kenwood|USS Queen City|USS Paw Paw|USS Moose|USS Bloomer|USS Ouachita|USS Argosy|USS Covington|USS Linden|USS General Grant|USS Hastings|USS Reindeer|USS Undine|USS Victory|USS Rodolph|USS Naumkeag|USS Tawah|USS Gazelle|USS Naiad|USS Nyanza|USS Tallahatchie|USS Vindicator|USS Siren|USS Avenger|General Sherman|General Thomas|USS Collier|USS Elfin|USS Colossus|USS Kate|USS Mist|USS Tensas|USS Oriole|USS Gamage|USS Abeona|USS Tempest

Are you going to do the names for the real life blockading squadrons and do C.S.A blockade runner names for brigs?

One issue with ships is that we often pay attention to the flavorless squadron names in the stack screen rather than the more fun names in the ships screen. I don't think I want to change the squadron names, as there weren't that many named squadrons, I think. If I'm wrong, let me know what squadron names to use or where to look for info (The main blockade squadron names are already hardcoded in game). Also note that the numbers I give don't include hard-coded elements, only those that are recruitable.

Union brigs are all already named. Confederate brigs, contonclads, and gunboats (and mortarboats) are all named from the same pool of 30 names for a force pool of 72, 30, and 50 (and 0). Since each brig has 2 ships, the ships are named in the first 15 builds of brigs the CSA recruits. Here are the names:

$LA|CSS Pamlico|CSS Tuscabora|CSS Ivy|CSS Jackson|CSS Maurepas|CSS Pontchartrain|CSS Bienville|CSS Carondelet|CSS Defiance§$TN|CSS Little Rebel|CSS Col Lovell§$TX|CSS Josiah A Bell§MAP|CSS William H Webb|CSS Gen Polk|CSS Livingston|CSS General Beauregard|CSS Gen Bragg|CSS Gen Earl Van Dorn|CSS Gen M Jeff Thompson|CSS Gen Sterling Price|CSS Gen Sumter|CSS Launch No 3|CSS Launch No 6|CSS Polk|CSS Mobile|CSS Nina|CSS Resolute|CSS St Mary|CSS Chattahoochee|CSS Kate Bruce

I'm not sure if these should have the same pool of names, all of these names are names of gunboats and cottonclads. 112 names are needed. I wasn't planning on finding names, since so many are needed. But given the request, I'll give it a shot. Let me know if there are any I should put first in the list.

Blockade squadrons and union brig ships share names 275 names for 600 and 240 ships respectively. If anyone is aware of a very long list of union ships I could merge with this one, it seems like a lot of work to add more. Here is the list:

USS Quaker City|USS Cambridge|USS Flag|USS Harriet Lane|USS Albatross|USS Dawn|USS Daylight|USS Louisiana|USS Monticello|USS Mount Vernon|USS Penguin|USS RB Forbes|USS Stars and Stripes|USS Valley City|USS Ceres|USS John L Lockwood|USS Thomas Freeborn|USS Underwriter|USS Union|USS Young Rover|USS Adelaide|USS Cohasset|USS Reliance|USS Young America|USS General Putnam|USS Yankee|USS Gemsbok|USS Arthur|USS Wissahicken|USS Rachel Seaman|USS Ethan Allen|USS Itasca|USS Sagamore|USS Water Witch|USS Sciopa|USS James S Chambers|USS Kingfisher|USS Samuel Rotan|USS Midnight|USS Tahoma|USS Kittatinny|USS Marion|USS Winona|USS A Houghton|USS Britannia|USS Fernandia|USS Gem of the Sea|USS Massachusetts|USS Oliver H Lee|USS Sam Houston|USS Sachem|USS State of Georgia|USS Western World|USS Two Sisters|USS Agassiz|USS Crusader|USS Howquah|USS Paul Jones|USS Morning Light|USS Maratanza|USS Princess Royal|USS Rhode Island|USS Alabama|USS Carrabasset|USS Comodore Hull|USS Comodore Perry|USS Belle italia|USS Cactus|USS Anemone|USS Florida|USS Honeysuckle|USS Ida|USS Lilian|USS Maria A Wood|USS Octorara|USS Banshee|USS Fox|USS Henry Brinker|USS Jacob Bell|USS Norfolk Packet|USS Moccasin|USS Pequot|USS Santiago de Cuba|USS Tristam Shandy|USS Uncas|USS Victoria|USS Stepping Stones|USS Shepherd Knapp|USS Vanderbilt|USS Antelope|USS Conemaugh|USS Brockenborough|USS Genesee|USS Hope|USS Henry James|USS Ellen|USS Delaware|USS Geranium|USS Matthew Vassar|USS Onward|USS Kensington|USS Nightingale|USS Niagara|USS Norwich|USS Snowdrop|USS Virginia|USS Azalea|USS Curlew|USS Beauregard|USS Adolph Hugel|USS Sea Bird|USS Commodore Barney|USS Commodore Jones|USS Cornubia|USS Bat|USS Alert|USS Advance|USS Grand Gulf|USS Sarah Bruen|USS GW Blunt|USS Sea Foam|USS James L Davis|USS Hydrangea|USS Dragon|USS Oleander|USS Restless|USS Proteus|USS Morse|USS Planter|USS Port Royal|USS CP Williams|USS Satellite|USS Paul Jones Jr|USS Nipsic|USS Mary Sanford|USS Sweet Briar|USS Wamsutta|USS Verbena|USS Tioga|USS Tigress|USS Wanderer|USS Aster|USS Santee|USS Cherokee|USS Breaker|USS Heliotrope|USS Harvest Moon|USS Granite|USS Flambeau|USS Mercedita|USS Para|USS Roebuck|USS Potomska|USS Lodona|USS Meteor|USS Shokokon|USS Yucca|USS Tioga|USS Sebago|USS Narcissus|USS Nansemond|USS Malvern|USS Philippi|USS Rosalie|USS Periwinkle|USS Mystic|USS George Mangham|USS Hetzel|USS Glasgow|USS Dart|USS EB Hale|USS Eolus|USS Commodore McDonough|USS Read|USS Corypheus|USS Nyanza|USS Primrose|USS Saco|USS Mahaska|USS Nereus|USS Clyde|USS Cayuga|USS Anacosta|USS Allegheny|USS Calypso|USS Tritonia|USS Sunflower|USS Shawmut|USS William Bacon|USS Saffron|USS Magnolia|USS Nyack|USS Preston|USS Merrimac|USS Hibiscus|USS Elk|USS Aaron V Brown|USS Pink|USS Cimarron|USS Sonoma|USS Tulip|USS Spirea|USS Jonquil|USS Cumberland|USS Columbia|USS Bloomer|USS Charles Phelps|USS Amanda|USS Whitehall|USS Velocity|USS Shawsheen|USS Antona|USS Calhoun|USS Augusta Dinsmore|USS Sumpter|USS Wando|USS Violet|USS Stettin|USS Resolute|USS New Berne|USS Peterhoff|USS Maumee|USS RR Cuyler|USS Madgie|USS Carmita|USS Adela|USS Carnation|USS Glaucus|USS Ella|USS Fuchsia|USS Hatteras|USS Gertrude|USS Annie|USS Courier|USS Westfield|USS William G Putnam|USS Vixen|USS South Carolina|USS Commodore|USS Ariel|USS Grosbeak|USS John P Jackson|USS Iuka|USS Estrella|USS Somerset|USS Sydney C Jones|USS Westfield|USS TA Ward|USS Southfield|USS Varuna|USS Arietta|USS Clover|USS Granite city|USS George W Rodgers|USS Arago|USS Currituck|USS Chocura|USS Dacotah|USS Hunchback|USS Eureka|USS Emma|USS Connecticut|USS Crocus|USS Cowslip|Fort Henry|USS Huntsville|USS Maria J Carlton|USS Mobile|USS Peony|USS Paltroon|USS Nita|USS Niphon|USS Pursuit|USS Rescue|USS Fort Morgan|USS Vicksburg

Thanks. I've seen those lists. They're both great, but don't lighten the load too much. I went through both a little and didn't find any that weren't already in the game. It really is a bit more hopeless than it seems since neither of those lists type the ships in the same way as the game. For instance, the ship, "CSS Bombshell" is in both list as a "steamship". In the game it is a ship in the frigate/steam sloop/sloop. Near as I can tell, it was a converted transport captured from the Union that carried 4 guns and was for a time part of the Mosquito Fleet (but was recaptured by the Union). I don't think it would have been ocean-going, so maybe it should be moved to river transport or river gunship. Looking that up took a few minutes. So if I'm trying to do that for a few hundred ships it would take days.

It seems like a mammoth task, I think that general names are enough for most of these vessels.

In February, I submitted the following file proposing ship names for the US fleet for:

Monitors, Ironclads, Armoured Frigates, Frigates, Steam Sloops, Sloops, Brigs, River ironclads, Timberclads, Gunboats, Mortar Boats and Blockade Ships.

The names were to be included with the next patch.

Based on what I've seen thus far, it's been incorporated into the latest release candidate. Now I know who to give this to:

Do you mean that it is in Public Beta Patch 1.04 RC4? That's great. Looking at the DB you posted, Le Ricain, the changes look great. It doesn't look like they are in the DB Pocus posted last week.

Yes.

Using 1.04 RC4, I started up a new April 1861 campaign and ran a few turns. The understrength Union fleets began filling with historically-named elements, rather than the generic "blockade ship." I haven't looked at LeRicain's DB, so I can only assume they are his changes. But I think it a safe assumption.

Hmm, le Ricain's changes are in the changelog of "CW2_DB_Models_v9q.rar "

9o Reduced by 10% cost of WS for ships Pocus
9p Added le Ricain names for US ships and nicknames for Generals Pocus
9q Fixed Flotilla brigades models that disappeared since 9m PHT

I looked closer at the DB (v9q), and it looks like the ships are moved around a lot from le Ricain's proposal, but his ships are mostly included in the newest models file (almost all but for example the USS Louisville is in the proposal but not v9q). I also discovered that a lot of the ships I had proposed were included somewhere (not always where I expected, but always in a sensible location as far as I understand (which isn't far for Naval units). In fact, I've reduced to 4 the number of ironclad ships I discussed above which weren't included already: USS Cohoes, USS Modoc, USS Wyandotte, and USS Louisville. The first 3 were coastal monitors that were still incomplete at the end of the war and the last was a river ironclad (I don't know why it isn't included).

Also, in the file the "USS Sangamon" is misspelled as "USS Sanganon".

Anyway, if you are interested in adding even more Naval units (great job, again, le Ricain), be sure to check out the post by lycortas2 in the "Help Improve CW2" forum (http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?35075-fixes). Myself, I don't plan on doing a lot more work on naval unit names for now.

Thanks, guys. I have been working on another AGEOD project and have not been able to follow this forum as much as in the past. I am glad that the ships' names seem to be in vers 1.04rc. Also my generals' nicknames!!!

Please let me add as a point for the devs, that the PbeM with havi & I has been dripping with blood, we have something like 1.2 million casualties between us as we approach the end of the game in mid-65. We haven't been shy about mixing it up on the dance floor.

From what havi has said, his promos are rare; mine have been close to non-existent, maybe half a dozen the whole game. This is all 1.03.

Much, much too slow. This kills the Union for any potentially decent Army Cdrs and kills the CSA for Corps Cdrs.
