Low chance of capturing enemy equipment

Wed Jan 29, 2014 1:42 am

I've had a couple of really big battles in Manassas where casualties where really high, between 20.000 and 30.000
CSA (me) was defending, Union attacked with lot's of divisions.
The assault failed and they had to retreat.
A couple of times this happened and I hadn't captured any artillery.
I know you get the rifles after winning such a big battle, but in such big battles, with that many casualties and chaos, one
would expect the retreating army to leave more equipment behind.
Is it a bit on the low side in the game? Or is it historical, meaning that there wasn't really that many guns captured after big battles?

Outside of sieges, the capture of complete batteries was pretty rare. Individual pieces were usually captured because they had become disabled and couldn't be removed, or were the last pieces to be withdrawn and were overrun as the rest of the battery retreated. The small number of guns captured usually replaced an army's own disabled, lost, or obsolete pieces, so there wasn't really any numerical gain in the number of artillery pieces. Outside of Nashville, I doubt that any army captured enough artillery pieces to offset its own losses in any field engagement. Since the artillery units in game reflect entire batteries, I think the chance to capture a battery should be low.

Indeed, judging by your explanation.
That's why I asked if it was historical or not. Seems like the setting is ok then.
Thanks

Quite simply, the guns are in the rear... when the army retreats, they are the first to retreat and they are the farthest from the enemy front line.
Beside... they move by horse that's why they're difficult to capture. Not impossible but difficult.
