Legion transport, how?

Sat Jan 25, 2014 1:11 am

Hi,
As a total AGE engine noob, I can't figure out how to transport a legion over the seas. In the manual, it is supposed to just work if the transports in place are big enough.
Is there no ship or combination of ships able to transport a full blown 600+ legion?
Thanks in avance.

Either you have to have the ground troops and the ships in the same province at the start of the turn (so you need a city with a port), and then simply drag and drop the ground stack to the fleet. The other option is having the ships in the adjacent coastal area, and then giving the ground troops a moving order to the ships. You can still give a movement order to the fleet, they'll delay the execution until the troops have been loaded. Both methods of course require that the fleet has enough transport capacity, you can find this out by hovering the cursor over the fleet tab. To find out the transport cost (weight) of your army, hover the cursor over their tab.

Edit: I suppose that the second method works even if your ground army is not in a coastal province, just means that your fleet will have to wait longer.

Now I understand the issue: my ships and units were in a single stack on Ancona itself, which is a city, not a harbour. You cannot load a ship when it is in a city. I still cannot understand how a ship can be in a city, by the way...
So I have to move the ships to the harbour, then drag & drop the ground units over it. What is troubling is that a ship can be in a city, and can be then stacked with other units. In such a case, the units are not on the ship, they are merely grouped with it, which is strange.
Thanks for raising the weight issue, so, an onerarium (which is a big transportation ship) should be able to transport 5 legions all by itself which means that an onerarium must have been damn huge.

Thanks a lot ! I'll start over my painful scenario; now I will be able to support Sulla with new legions over Greece \o/

The onerariums are transport squadrons, so makes sense that they have bigger cargo holds. Beware of storms! They can be really devastating if they catch your ships. Usually sailing in autumn and winter is risky, especially in certain areas. Some of the most dangerous ones seem to be Sicily's southern coast, the sea areas around Brundisium and most of Greece's coast.

Helpful reply to OP.
I still get caught by storms. A born gambler! :bonk:

Unless I misunderstand your post, something is wrong in your game.

It is NOT OK to have ships in a land stack.

Can you post a saved game with this situation ??

I'll post the save game as soon as I can.

Here is what I did:
In AJE v1.03c, in the Marius vs Sulla Scenario, as Sulla, I build an Onerarium in Ancona by dragging the unit from the unit build toolbar to Ancona. When constructing and constructed, the Onerarium is in Ancona itself.
By the way, at the begginning of the scenario, there are already ships lying in Ancona. And for some reason, moving the ships to Ancona's harbour takes two days.

So the issue seems to be that it's possible to build a ship in a coastal city rather than in a harbour.

Again, I may be misunderstanding, but I will post a screenshot:

Marius vs Sulla, new game, playing Sulla. In Ancona we have a fleet and I just ordered the construction of a onerarium ship. Both "fleets" are "in harbour", as can be seem by the number "2" in the blue square.

Had a long day yesterday, I'll brace myself and post the thing tonight, after work. Incoming!

I cannot reproduce the thing and I can neither find the save where that happened, in the pile of my aborted games. Either I failed to see something at the time, such as a legion or transport building (which would be the most probable possibility), or even a locked unit in a stack, or I found a complex bug case (which I fail to believe myself).
As Franciscus pointed out, it should not be possible and the visual position of the ship in the region does not seem to matter as much as I believe.

So, if I see anything suspicious of this kind, I will post my save in this thread. Until then, sorry for freaking you out, nice Ageod people ;)
