Use of Brigs?

Tue Oct 29, 2013 3:03 pm

I saw a previous post that advised putting Brigs in the blockade box as blockade runners. That seems to net a small amount of money and WS. I put them in the shipping box and get much bigger numbers. Comments from other will be appreciated.

While I'm here----------

The manual speaks of 'combining units'. Is this like taking two 4 element units and making an 8 element unit? If so I can't see how to do it.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

The numbers you get in the message box about damage done in the shipping box are somewhat off. The devs are aware of the glich and have said they will correct it in future patch 1.02.
Actual damage to Union shipping in $ and WS is similar to actual gain in blockade boxes. Since, as CSA you are more short on everything than US, you would do best to acquire a few resources than to deprive the Union of it.
So, stick to blockade boxes...

Maybe taking 2 single element units and combine them into 2 element unit?

As the CSA, leave the shipping box to frigates and put your brigs in the blockade box.

If you have single element brigs, set them to passive mode and if you have replacements available they will build the second element.

The blockade box is much more deadly in CWII than it was in ACW. Single element ships are likely to be sunk at once and have to be rebuilt from scratch. Waiting an extra 45 days for the second element is the smart way to go. Combining them into a fleet in the box is also best as the damage is shared between ships, so you lose fewer and keep earning money and war supply for a longer time.

You can only combine units to the maximum allowable for the unit. So for example, if you have a squadron of brigs, the most the unit can have is 2 brigs. If you have a unit with 1 brig, you can combine it with another unit with 1 brig to make a 2 brig unit. You can not combine two 2 element brig units to make a "super" brig unit of 4 brigs. This can be done on land as well. A lot of units start the game missing elements. If you have the correct replacements, the units will gain missing elements, but if you have another unit that can be added, this is the manual way of adding back elements.

Personally, I usually only combine some ships and the single element infantry units (they make great replacements for missing elements in larger brigades, and you can get faster replacements this way - instead of 1 replacement from the pool, you can add 2 infantry elements on the same turn).
Remember - The beatings will continue until morale improves.
