PBEM process questions

Mon Oct 07, 2013 12:31 am

Just starting a PBEM game and am finding the changes a bit perplexing, so I have some questions not answered in the manual.

First how can you rename your game?

Second with turn compression turned on I was not prompted for a password, how do you protect your turn file?

Third where is the .trn file? I only see .hst and .ord in the save folder after saving the game from within game. I searched my PC for .trn and got no result.

Fourth does it matter if the hosting player has the AI turned on or off when he runs the turn? In other words if I have a game vs. the AI and one vs. a human do I have to turn the AI on and off in the options settings when switching between the two games?

first bit, in saved games, create/rename a folder - the default is it names saved folders GC0/GC1 and so on as you start games with a particular scenario, but you can always change this to something memorable, perhaps to stop you deleting it by accident (I tend to delete old saves every now and then, esp if I've been testing a lot of starting options)

Second bit - must confess I use 7zip to compress once the saves are normally generated. Allows me to rename (good for insulting your opponent) and to protect if needed

last bit - no. It actually helps to keep the AI on, even if only playing PBEM, as that triggers a warning message if orders are missing (prob more use in 3 player games but still a useful backcheck)

Hi,

To rename a game, go to Load Game, click on the CPU chip then on the button with a pencil.

As there is no more TRN files and everyone is using the same HST file, password protection has been dropped, sorry. Compressing turn is done so that you don't have to do it manually, but it provides no protection if you don't trust your opponent. The only option left I can think about right now would be to ask another person to arbitrate and process your turns and perhaps you give him back the favor on one of his games.

As for AI, as Loki says. There is no adverse effect, on the contrary.

Thanks for the replies gents, we have it worked out now thanks. As to the password, I trust my opponent without question, it’s just a matter of old dog and new tricks. I’ve played all your titles over the years and simply expected to see what I’ve grown accustomed to in the past. That and the fact the game manual told me to expect the same behavior when I looked it up.

yes, I gladly admit we have quite our share in the misunderstanding :)

There is somewhere somewhen the project of porting online the manual so it is kept up to date and tidier.

Re-Visiting this thread, because I can't get a PBEM launched.

I started the game normally, as Union, didn't issue any orders. I saved, exited, and re-named the save, all within the game

Exiting the game, went to SAVE file, and did NOT see any TRN files to send to opponent. My ORD in there, and HST file, but no TRN files

Am I missing something?

Thanks! Works now.

There should be a sticky or corrected version of the manual on this one...that would help. In fact, at some point an updated manual would be helpful.
