[PON] Conflict in Europe - Miscellanea Thread (statistics, info, etc)

Tue Feb 19, 2013 10:07 pm

The year in our game is 1874. It was very interesting to watch yesteday a DVD of last year's Anna Karenina. Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece is supposed to take place in that year. If you watch this film, make sure you notice how the society works (just a few years after serfdom was abolished), how they dress, how they behave, etc.

Wow, looks rather alternate reality in 1874 in Western Europe. France seems to have regained its lost territories (and got some more) but Austria-Hungary has been overcome by the triple alliance of German-Russian-Ottoman Empires...

Are you playing with Extended Claims, or you allow by scripts very restricted extended claims?

This is a snapshot in the middle of a war so it's not representative of the actual borders. :)

True, apologies, I should have written that... it looks very close to the immediately-after-WW2 borders. Pocus, if you read us now and then, we want your insight why Napoleon the 3rd has not succumbed by 1874. Actually Vezina is making progress with him. Even Crown Prince Eugene (Napoleon IV) is a decorated General in our alternate reality. Can we force him "die" somehow (ruler succession command)? The event of surgical complications of Napoleon has fired already and because we didn't have the Franco-Prussian war on the historical time, Napoleon went from President to Emperor to President again.

It seems to me there are some bugs or at least errors with some ruler data files. For example, US President Johnson (the one after Lincoln but before Grant) did not appear in our game at all.

nemethand, can you confirm that you can build a similarly dressed "unit" in 1874?

I went to a really nice photographic exhibition here in Thessaloniki. Although most of the images are from the Great War (a little bit later in our game), nonetheless it shows how the major powers were using their colonial troops to beef up their numbers. I even found something I wasn't aware of, there were Japanese troops in Greece in 1916!! Hmm, I should probably take care of that when time comes! :p

Although the late 19th century is probably the twilight of cavalry, I still enjoy using it in this game in scouting and mopping operations. I think, however, that it has to be used a little bit differently in respect to earlier AGEOD (especially those of the antiquity that also use elephants) titles.

For me the best use of cavalry so far is mostly as an independent leaderless unit that is always (or almost) at attack stance so it can engage an enemy army (or partisans, insurgents, rebels, etc) as they move into a region or as your own army moves to another region (acting as a vanguard). Its rules of engagement should accordingly be "hit and run". It is also very useful attached to a 3-star General stack (with other fast units ONLY possibly) in the back where it can march-to-the-sound-of-guns quickly and decisively and engage with already damaged units. The hefty health/cohesion hits cavalry can deliver, are devastating at point blank (where the 2x charge damage takes place), virtually destroying any wavering rival.

:dada:

On the other hand, it is really a bad idea to attack an already entrenched rival with mounted units, especially if he has artillery emplaced. It will needlessly take enough damage and cohesion loss to almost die before making contact.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Personally, can't wait for even heavier units like late-game armored cars and tanks!!

Agree. You might also want to consider heavy cavalry units (dunno if Japan has any), especially in clear terrain. Their assault values are even greater.

I am really awaiting biplanes and is curious about their spedd and ability to move "over" enemy/neutral (?) held terrritory.

Ito Hirobumi, the man that succeeded Okubo Toshimichi as the first real Prime Minister of Japan (in the 80s). He will probably be a recurring figure in our game, cause as in real life, he held the post of PM for many times.

Image

Pretty impressive game stats as well, only slightly less than Toshimichi (who had 9-9-8). He is more "conservative" in his administration skill (meaning a production bonus of only 10% instead of 20%), but is better in diplomacy (a 20% bonus overall) which will give more possibilities for Japan to be appreciated in its position as an equal peer among colonizing-Westernizing nations.
