Wondering about the "operational side of things". Do the mechanics of the game allow representation of ambush/hidden movement operations like I think happened at the "Wilderness" campaign?

That was Chancellorsville.
The answer would be both Yes and No.
No, because that exact movement happened within the area of just one small region (Albermale, VA) in the game.
Yes, because depending on the size of the force and ability of the commander (IIRC Jackson does have a Surprise special ability), you can achieve local surprise.
But it would happen within the game engine and not necessarily on the map.
Although, it is very possible to have Jackson move along undetected and "appear" in the Union rear area. It all depends on the enemies dilegence in security. The more military control you have of a region, the better info you have on enemy movements.
So if your enemy has no "eyes" on you (as happened to the Union at Chancellorsville and 2nd Manasass) you should be able to sneak up on him.
John_C wrote:Thanks. Well I'm no expert either on the Civil War. I mentioned the Wilderness campaign because I think it's the one shown in the movie "Gods and Generals" (superb movie by the way!).
Basically the rebel forces manage to surprize the yankees by doing a force march through the woods unnoticed. That sort of manouvre i was referring to, that is, if one could use forests to move hidden so as to surprize enemies on the other side of the forest.
