The Union is growing!! :)

Korean Peninsula, July 1876

OPERATIONS COMMENCE

Field Marshal Arimoto has instructed his troops to invade Southeastern Korea, capturing the small city of Pusan. Two other invading forces headed for Northeastern Korea and Formosa island. With this triple movement we hope to cripple in the first days of war the ability of the Chinese (and Koreans) to amass troops. It is known by our bombarding ships that there are large concentrations of Chinese troops in Seoul, but we are ready to face them. The Imperial Guards have also landed in Pusan. An anchorage and depot is being built for more resources to be moved in, although the close distance to the home islands means this is not critical, at least at the moment.

bjfagan wrote:CRISIS ON BELGIAN BORDER

The German border with Belgium was closed off to all traffic this week, after reports were received of Germans being attacked in towns throughout the province of Luxembourg. The German War Office stated agents inside Belgium reported seeing angry Belgian mobs looting German shops and assaulting ethnic Germans in the streets. “These attacks are obviously retaliation for what happened to Belgian minorities here in Germany several weeks ago,” commented War Minister Georg von Kameke. “This is a sad turn of events that will only add fuel to the fire. Troops will be dispatched to the frontier to prevent Belgian mobs from crossing the border and attacking Germans on our soil.”

In a released statement, Chancellor von Bismarck warned the Belgian government to control the unrest in Luxembourg and announced he was recalling the ambassador to Brussels. “Germany will not tolerate these attacks on its citizens nor those against other ethnic Germans. If Belgium cannot contain the unrest in Luxembourg, then we will have no choice but to do it for them.”

Lies and Slanders

The German press has been publishing several fictional articles regarding non-existent attacks on German minorities. Accusing the peaceful Belgian people, an heterogeneous people made of several distinct cultures no less, of ethnic attacks.

The Belgian Government as tried time and time to normalize the relations with Germany after the war, since it never wished in any of it's actions to offend or harm the Germans. But instead we only get accusations and threats regardless of ourefforts, and it's seems that unfortunately the German decided to embrace a fully Imperialist policy and threaten to invade us, even after all we did for them. It's truly sad to see a great power walk in such a vile and warmongering path.

JAPANESE NAVY SCORES HITS ON CHINESE GUNBOATS

The blockade of the Korean peninsula is rather strict and there was no possibility for two attempts of the Chinese Navy to challenge our ships. Numerous rival vessels were sunk, the rest of them have fled to their ports. As long as the weather permits it, the naval operations will continue.

Korean Peninsula, September 1876

OPERATIONS PROCEED, FOUL WEATHER POSTPONED THE ADVANCE

The Japanese forces in Korea continue their assault as more supplies and men keep pouring in in an effort to counter and completely surround the Chinese Expeditionary Army. Under the wise lead of General Aritomo, our forces managed to shake the Chinese opponents, although the heavy early autumnal rain cancelled our advance. Nonetheless, it is important to notice that due to our rival's outdated armed forces, even seemingly in defeat, we were more than able to make them suffer double our losses. The weather is reported fair for October, so if the Generals feel ready, our forces will continue their assault.

An independent Korean-Chinese corps inbound from the Seoul region tried to outflank our main thrust in Kwangju, an attempt that failed miserably as our light scouting cavalry spotted them in time.

---

OOC: I have to give it to the AI (and previous players: Joe and Spinoza), the Chinese forces are putting a valiant defense albeit being horribly outdated to the point my heavy cavalry mows them down... I have also noticed a small interesting detail regarding my leader variety as Japan. They have almost all (so far at least) bonuses in attack but none or very little in defense. This probably goes well with the "attacking spirit" of the Japanese forces against tribal and outclassed rivals, but may give me problems in the future with more serious opponents. In other words, attacking is great, especially if you sport heavy charging cavalry, but it could get stopped in its tracks against a heavily entrenched enemy with artillery and machine guns. Hint to my future enemies! :p

SURPRISED BY A CHINESE COUNTERATTACK

General Aritomo was about to strike Seoul again when he met a counterattacking Chinese army. Li Hongzhang decided to take matters in his own hands and that attack is the best form of defense. He succeeded. Only thanks to our independent backups we managed to fend off the assault and force Hongzhang back to Seoul. Many casualties and prisoners from both sides.

Hainan Island, October 1976

CHINESE HAINAN RELIEF FORCE

We recently managed to seize with a surprise attack the island of Hainan. Our marines were quite efficient into taking the fort and port of the town of Haiku. Nevertheless, it did not go well with the Chinese who have brought in a relief force which tried to take the fortifications immediately. They were repulsed after continuous waves of assault, more casualties on them, except for the 5 assault which somehow caught us off guard. As long as we have the port open, we can bring in reinforcements making their life miserable. Hoping our boys can hold!

It seems to our side that the Chinese won't yield easily. Even in their attempt to ask for peace a couple of months ago, they only gave us reparations for 5 years to buy out our neutrality. We are steadfast to prevail now.

CONTINUOUS ASSAULTS IN HAIKU REPELLED; THOUSANDS OF DEAD

The Chinese High Command seems to consider Hainan an important island that probably protects the Cantonese hinterland and trade routes, so they bring reinforcements continuously. But so do we! And our advanced weapons will keep them out of the port city of Haiku.

SEOUL OCCUPIED!

Li Hongzhang has finally been defeated. His continuous attempts to rout our troops has limited his own ability to wage a defensive war. When Aritomo finally managed to mount a cohesive offensive, we were all but unstoppable. General Ariguwasa joined the battle from the North. Seoul has been seized by Japanese troops: the Joseon Dynasty is almost done!!

DIARIO DE JANEIRO

Italian agents soliciting financial contributions and volunteers from Brazilians of Italian origin have found little support and much disappointment among them with a regime in Rome that disdains diplomatic and economic intercourse with their new homeland and is seen to recklessly squander recent gains in imprudent opportunism. The embarrassing situation of the Kingdom of Italy means it is rarely a desired topic of conversation other than as a dramatic and tragic counterpoint to conditions in the Empire. Said a former Milanese banker: "Italy is beyond help until it acts like a reasonable power - building alliances, gaining allies, and acting with prudence rather than recklessly toward self-destruction" and "Lombardy under the Austrians is a tragedy, but Rome under the Austrians is a travesty." A staunch Imperialist, he nonetheless says a republic in Italy might bring good change. Past pressure among Brazilians of Italian origin for Imperial support of Italy against Austria has dissipated in the face of a warming of relations with Vienna and continued failures of the Italian government.

Hainan, November 1876

MORE ASSAULTS REPELLED

The Chinese still bring reinforcements and now the number laying siege and assaulting Haiku port is a mindblowing 300000+ men. One of our Generals has moved in from Formosa to orchestrate the defenses and had some luck repelling the attempts to seize the port fortifications. How much can we hold on Hainan depends on our ability to bring reinforcements as we bleed the Chinese with their own atrocious casualties.

Hainan, December 1876

HAIKU FALLS TO THE CHINESE ONSLAUGHT

An army's worth of soldiers has surrended to the Chinese horde after three days of intense and unstoppable fighting. Matsudaira Sadaaki stand no chance against this concentration of forces. He has now retreated to Formosa to tend on his wounds and give a complete debriefing. The concentrating power of China was nothing short of astonishing. The morale of the nation fell sharply as news of the major defeat broke into Tokyo, hopefully the wives and mothers may one day see their loved ones as most of them were taken prisoners and not KIA or executed (so far).

JAPANESE NAVY STOPS CHINESE SHIPS FROM BRINGING REINFORCEMENTS TO THE ISLANDS

At least some sort of accomplishment came in the early parts of December. Our patrolling ships managed to defeat the Chinese gunboats that tried to get near Formosa in vain. It was quite interesting because of the major contribution of the Ryukyuan fleet. Our vassals from Okinawa showed superb courage attacking their previous overlords while taking losses.

TONKINESE PIRATES ATTACK OUR TORPEDO BOATS NEAR HAINAN

Adding insult to injury, shameless pirates from Tonkin surprised our torpedo boats which were shadowing the siege of Haiku port and managed to capture and scuttle two of them. Their ambush was quite unexpected as their equipment was mainly old smoothbore low caliber cannons and matchlocks from earlier times. The government of Japan asks the contribution of the French Republic to hunt down and destroy the pirates. A 500 (state money) reward will be given to the country which manages to extract revenge for us for this attack.

A French squadron of refitted ships has just arrived in French Indochina, and will begin anti-piracy operations as requested by our Japanese friends henceforth.

?War in the Colonies?

We have been told that the Xhosa tribe has decided to attack our gallant settlers in South Africa. However, our reports from the fields indicate that no Xhosian warriors have yet been spotted anywhere near any of our troops (or reporters) in the area. Your valiant reporters are attempting to ascertain the veracity of this reported "war". We will bring you any news as soon as we get it. if there is any war, you can rest assured that we will uncover it with our utmost zeal.

I'm sorry, been busy. I'll try to communicate more later tonight.

Your submitted offer would be acceptable if accompanied by friendship between Italy and Austria going forward, including a treaty that makes us allies for the next 10 years or more with harsh penalties for breaking the treaty.

If Italy is unable or unwilling to be friends with Austria in the future, than the Austrian demands would also include further territory in Italy, Lombardia and Friuli along with most of the Italian colonies and a cap on the size of the Italian army going forward.

The Italy have answer to Autrochia.

3 proposition with understand your claims :

Proposition 1 :
So you take Friuli, and 3 000 stat fond.

15 years no war treaty if is good for you, I can also go in defence treaty for next 15 years but with the size of my army, a Qatar are more power ^^.

After 15 years all treaty are disbend.

Proposition 2 :
If you need long long ally with Italy, this is my offers, all territory with 50 % and more Italy go in Italy, All Italy colony go to Autrochia, Autrochia take 3 000 state fond in this years, and 50 by all next turn (for all time so after 10 turn = 500 more stat fond, after 100 turn = 5 000....) for all time so no stop never. Defence treaty with Autrichia and Italy diplomatie are fallow the Autrichia diplomatie for the next 40 years.

Proposition 3 (not ally):
you take Lombardia and Friuli, all colony, 3 000 stat fond, and Italy never go more to 4 000 power for army and 2 000 power for naval fleet.

[For penality chose what you need, but that can only set VP for penality, not people are god in this game, so you can't said I lose army because I not fallow treaty. But if you have see the war with Prussia I am very loyal ally.]

Pyongyang, Korea, December 1876

PYONGYANG ARMY RETREATS: JAPAN IS ALMOST MASTER OF KOREA

The Chinese army of Korea has left in retreat. The Empire of Japan will be soon lord of the Korean peninsula, completing the work of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's expeditions more than 3 centuries ago.

Image

Kagoshima, Japan, January 1877

SAIGO'S REBELLION

A once loyal General of the Japanese army has openly rebelled over the choices of the "new regime". The ridiculing of the Samurai soldiers has been too much for his faction, given they were stripped of their katanas a few months ago. Now the loss of Hainan and the disillusionment of the overseas expedition in China is the perfect opportunity to strike for an autonomous Kyushu... perhaps with Saigo Takamori as the new Shogun?

Image

THE IMPERIAL RESPONSE

Imperial troops with lots of cavalry have been dispatched by train to the troubled island of Kyushu. Considering that the ousted garrison of Kagoshima will not last long, they are much awaited. Akiyoshi Yamada, a relatively inexperienced General is in command of the pacifying force.

Image

A PLACE IN THE SUN

Japan makes small but certain steps in the competing world of domination and spheres of influence. As we discover newer ways to create sturdy ships to resist our rivals, we declare that we simply need OUR PLACE IN THE SUN. Nothing more, nothing less.

Image

NIPPON: A POCKET EMPIRE

Korea is almost subdued. The Kagoshima rebellion has just erupted. Southern Sakhalin still thinks it is Japanese (nb. probably because Russia has no garrison there it reverted to Japanese military control, but it should only be an artifact).

Yalu River, Korea, January 1877

JAPANESE TROOPS REACH THE MOUTH OF YALU RIVER

Imperial troops have managed to unroot the Chinese expeditionary forces in Korea, reaching river Yalu, the natural border with the Russian Empire and its Manchurian colony. The Chinese army is still largely unscathed, but now it is without supplies and hiding in the mountains and hills of Northern Korea. Its complete surrender is hopefully a matter of two-months-worth of mopping operations.

Kagoshima, Japan, January 1877

TAKAMORI FLEES TO THE MOUNTAINS

Saigo Takamori has decided to flee to the mountains, leaving his home base Kagoshima to fall back to the imperial troops. Not before fighting a decent battle, though, which gave our scouting cavalry severe casualties. However, now that the 'Ko' Division has arrived from Honshu island, things will be easier. Takamori's outdated samurais are no match for the modernized Imperial Army.

Image

(note: the arriving 3-star General and his units did not fight this battle, only the two cavalry divisions did)

PS. This is the point where you push PLAY on "The Last Samurai" and enjoy a similar ending. :turc:
It's a shame one of my most powerful Generals (Saigo Takamori) to have turned enemy. His attacking stats 4-5-0 were really impressive. Alas, this is history!

Wow, hugely interesting and completely unknown to me. I really love the research the game designers have put into the game for some of the most obscure events in the game. :)

Kyushu, Japan, March 1877

WHERE IS TAKAMORI?

The rebels are scoring many hits on our soldiers, but Takamori will soon be apprehended and put to justice. Our troops use the railroad to be in complete readiness wherever the rebels appear. Their time is done, Kyushu will be pacified. The Samurai are a thing of the past...

---

In other news, I have a difficulty to catch up and destroy the 4K (!!) strong power of the Chinese in Korea although I defeat it in almost every battle. By retreating they get too few casualties and they seem to receive reinforcements each turn, although they are on totally foreign (100% Japanese MC) ground. The hell...

Should we look at nerfing China somehow? The Europeans weren't actually threatened at all by the Chinese army at this point in history. Look at the opium wars, when the Brits and French were usually outnumbered 50 to 1 or worse and still won each battle with ease.

I am not sure where the problem lies (or if there is even a problem). I believe that it is somewhere deep in the game files, and would take a lot of time/effort to fix.

The Ottoman Empire expresses its content about the return of Bulgaria and Kars under rightful rule.

It announces the installation of a new provisional government under Citizen X Pasha.
The new government has mandate for one year, with possible extension.

Citizen X Pasha announces the cornerpoints of his government:
Domestically the people need food and clothing. This will be the foremost priority. Alongside with building up the spending power of the industry and the mass purchasing power.
Externally the course of the new government wont change dramatically from that of its predecessors. It is good for all its defence treaties. The new Pasha dissociates from all aggressional policies.

However, the Ottoman government will keep defending vigorously all its rightful claims on the diplomatic parquet.

The Sublime Port will maintain its claims and obligations as protector of the Holy Cities and their surrounding areas. All pilgrims are welcome and are garanteed free and safe passage.

The new prime minister calls in for his aides to sort out all foreign and internal obligations. The installation of his ad-hoc plan to recover the country hasn't given him time to look into all treaties himself.
All embassadors of countries who believe to have any diplomatic claims on the new government of his majesty, the sultan shall apply for audience to bring forth the cause.
(I can see all that is in F9 screen of course, but can't know of any off hand treaties. Eventually I will have read all in the dropbox folders, however some hints are welcome :) )

Alas, I managed to score a nice set of minor stalemates and a victory this last turn, bringing some destroyed elements in the tally. They have fallen from 4K to 3K... I only need to keep my Generals hitting them and under pressure, perhaps after all they indeed do not take reinforcements now. Crossing fingers for good results in this fortnight as well! :w00t:

I think it is normal that the Chinese are elusive with huge feudal armies and a significant rival to subdue. We are not supposed (as majors) to partition and destroy China in this era, that would be unrealistic... but perhaps take concessions and a couple of its colonies/protectorates. That is what Japan is trying at least. I wish we had a player to control the negotiations as the AI needs hardcore convincing! :p
