Unable to build Army HQ as Union v1.02

Fri Apr 27, 2007 11:55 pm

Just fired up a new game as Union April '61 campaign. i notice that there are no Army HQ's available to be purchased in the reinforcements screen.

am i doing something wrong? are they moved to another screen? is there a time delay when USA cannot purchase Army HQ?

If you have drained your force pool of a particular unit type, you won't see it in the build screen. Also, the first couple of turns, you won't be able to buy any units at all (but I guess your past that, since you have singled out Army HQs as something you can't build?)

As i recall, the US and CS only get the ability to build new Army Hqs starting in December of 61, unless they managing to get their event-given ones destroyed.

Not for the Union they don't. I'm into late October and I have but one Army HQ. And all of the Division HQs I purchase all end up in Maryland. Thus, in order to get divisions out west I have to rail them way across the country, and it takes forever.

As it is, in early October, my forces are a complete scattered mess. Getting any kind of organization together is nearly impossible. I have at least three three-star generals out west and they haven't been active for quite a while.

The Confederates have a bucket-load of single brigades and such running all over the map, infultrating north, as far as Ohio.

I hope I can get things squared away soon.

It is my experience that All Division and Army HQs come into your national Capital.

The latest 1.01 patch (must be 1.01b I think) cut on number of army HQ, so each one is to be appreciated. This will render even more difficult the relegation of McClellan, and this is what we want. On the other hand the messages talking about HQ arrival can perhaps be reworded.

I'm running v 1.02 as the Union and last turn [about late Aug 61 (turn 10) as I recall] my event list said that I would be able to build armies. However, a turn later I still can't build one because the army container doesn't show up on the available reinforcements table. It sure would be nice to know when I will be able to build a second (or third, or fourth...) army.

(this is completely different than before v. 1.02)

we will adjust the messages, so that when they appears, you have at least one buildable HQ.

The command structure at the beginning of the game may be frustrating, but it is an accurate representation of the chaos and amateurism of the first year of the war. If armies and divisions were readily available, the player (with 20/20 historical hindsight) would have far too much control. It was the spring of 1862 before either side was able to field large effective forces, and political generals plagued both Lincoln and Davis until 1864. Pocus and crew are to be commended for one of the best simulations of the command and control problems of the ACW anyone has ever done.

Indeed - genius; pure genius.

They captured the significance of this very well.

Thanks! :coeurs: we do the design together, Philippe and I (the other Philippe ;) ). Also the betas are good at making remarks and proposals to change rules during the developement process.

About the chaos, that's okay with me, as long as both sides are in the same state.

As far as Army HQs go, I got my first one in the force pool:

It came in early December, 1861. Now I can start getting things organized and ready come spring. Right now, it appears I'm getting whooped pretty badly, though it's hard to tell.

Thanks for a great game which has given me hours (added together makes days) of enjoyment.
