Legionary replacement system

Tue Mar 26, 2013 2:10 am

Awhile back I posted a statement about the use of replacements for legions in AJE being ahistorical.
I was told I was wrong that legions did use replacments. Here is an interesting link to a discussion on the subject
http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/17-roman-military-history-a-archaeology/316688-legion-reinforcements.html

I believe that the use of replacements in the 1st punic war isn't historical
Now don't get me wrong I love the game I play it and witp ae exclusively.
The number of battles fought[during the actual war there were only 3 set or pitched battles fought and 1 of them was fought in Africa under Regulas]
You can have that many battles in a year in game, but I agree that playing the war out historically would be boring mostly it was a war of sieges except for at sea
The discussion members opinion of dando-stephens has me thinking of rereading his books to get an idea about their criticisms.

You may be right. The game economy was built to give replacements to legions rather than rebuild them. I'm for anything that improves the historical accuracy, but this would need some serious changes.
