Avoid the mistake I made...

Wed Apr 25, 2007 5:31 pm

I made the mistake of breaking up the Army of the Shenandoah (sp?) early in the April campaign while trying to make Jackson it's Corp commander and couldn't reform it as there were no Army HQ's. Also I couldn't build any Army HQ's because that option isn't available under Reinforcements/Support. So I end up with a large Army of the Potomac commanded by Beauregard and 4 Corps commanded by Holmes, Bonham, Johnson (3 star), and Jackson. At some point I should be able to purchase a new Army HQ and sort everything out.

How could the army of Shenandoah have existed without an army HQ? The army HQ will be with General Johnston just move the mouse over him in the unit panel.

In the April `61 scenario, I've noticed that Johnston's forces do not enter the game as an army. Usually I have Johnston take over command of Beauregard's army. Then I make Jackson and Beauregard corps commanders. Sometimes I move Beauregard west to Tennessee, Arkansas or Missouri if I want to make a major push in any of those areas. No point keeping two good army commanders in the same area. It all works out. This game has a very historical feel to it.

There is no Army of the Shenandoah in the April 1861 cam(although it sure would be nice for the CSA if there was). Johnstons formation is just an independent command with Jackson as a subordinate. Thats why you couldn't (re)form an army there. By the way, I've found using Jackson and Johnston as corps commanders to be very useful until I can build new army hq's. :D

Post-patch (1.01 or 1.01a) there is no Army of the Shenandoah in the July 1861 campaign either. It's just "Johnston's Command," not an Army. The first thing I do is make it a corps of Beauregard's Army.

Is this historical? Before the patch Johnston was his own Army in the July scenario.

Historically, yes there was an Army of the Shenandoah in July. The Army was formed at Harpers Ferry in early April, with Jackson quickly taking command( senior brigadier on site?). Johnston took command in the valley in late May and when 1st Manassas occured the AoS was still a seperate command(we are talkin about 10,000+ men here, in name an army but more corps sized). It was Merged with the Army of the Potomac shortly after the battle.

Heh, I've had a few of those; especially before I started getting my head around the system for command-chains :D
