Pax romana

Wed Jan 23, 2013 12:48 pm

Some years ago P.Thibaut designed this game, the project was unfinished and i have a copy of that game at home taking dust.

I remember it was a nice game with an original idea.

Have you Philippe ever think about retaking the project?

is it possible?

Pax Romana was focusing mostly on playing a Political game, with different Roman factions competing for power. The political game and rules were the core of the project.

I believe it could be totally feasible to use AJE-BOR as a base (for the military aspect of things) and then design again a political part, may be playing a lot with options and RGD...but that would require a lot of time to think things the proper way...

For those of you who never had the pleasure to play Pax Romana, you are missing a great game. I am not certain if it is still available. But it is a wonderful companion game to AJE. Pax Romana is all about faction building, the politics of getting the appointment to Consulship in Rome. Now we are met on the great battlefield of these factional fights. AJE is such a delightful companion game. Not linked, but totally focused upon the Roman world.

Yes Pax Romana was a beautiful game, unfortunately unfinished. Never seen the political part again in any game, together with trading and military. Would just be great if we could see a Pax Romana II some day :coeurs:

And it was protected by Starforce drm (my pc became noisy with such games): so the game went to my trashbin.
This game should be released on GOG now.

Already posted this in the Great Invasions Forum, but saw there are newer posts around this topic here, so post my problems with Pax Romana here again:

Hi PhilThib!

Tried what you suggested and copied the whole Dreamcatcher-Folder from my old WinXP-HardDrive to my new Windows7 machine. Unfortunately it doesen't run, always says system has to restart to finalise the installation, however doesen't work ... He doesen't even search for a CD nor something ...
Do you have an idea what could be done about it? Perhaps you have the unprotected .exe which you could share? Btw I am running (or try running) Pax Romana version 1.02 (the lastest available I think).

Thanks in advance
Chris

If someone else has a solution for the Windows 7 - Pax Romana problem (doesen't let me install from the CD as it says I have no valid operation system), please tell me! As I wrote I have a copy of the game files on my old hard drive from my old XP-Machine (which is no more working) and of course the original Pax Romana-CDROM. Really would like to start it on again

Send me an email to pthibaut@ageod.net, I migth have a non-protected copy of Pax Romana somewhere....I know it runs under Win7, although you can see it's a 15-year old code / tech... ;)

Ahhh, Pax Romana! I remember that game with great love. I bought two copies back in the days and played it for a good while. The copy-protection was a a problem, I remember struggling quite a bit to get it to work, but it was well worth it!

The game was fantastic. The epic struggle to expand the republics borders, the political fight to win positions to keep command of your legions, provinces and consulships, the development of provinces and trade... :)

The problem was the terrible support the game got from its publisher (DreamCatcher Interactive), it never had a chance to achieve real playability, not to mention its true potential. I remember reading about it on an unofficial forum where fans tried to keep it alive, sad story..

A Pax Romana II would be a dream come true. Philippe Thibaut, I have always hoped for a sequel. Wouldn't it be a great project for AGEOD? :)

But, even when working as intended, it prevent me from playing, for it was making my pc too noisy and was not respecfull for the mate I lodged.
I remember wondering for long why my CD driver was now irritating so often working for nothing: some games (the Starforce ones) had hacked its official driver (without asking nor warning clearly on the gamebox or otherwise).
DRMs are protections against playing.

I agree, the protection was awful.

But an AGEOD Pax Romana II wouldn't have that issue.

Well, the political module by itself would take months to produce with the AGE engine...but the Alea Jacta Est team will produce a great series of titles on Roman history that will fill some of the gap..

I am sure it would be a challenge to adapt it. But well worth it, in my opinion. ;)
I have both AJE and BOR and are enjoying them a lot. But a Pax Romana II with the AJE/BOR military aspect, that would be something else.. At least tell us you will consider it. :)

Maybe raise money and interest for it through Kickstarter? I know I would support it.

Kickstarter could be interesting indeed, but money is not the sole parameter...time allowance is more critical and I have none for the next 2-3 years at best...

I really think Kickstarter would work for a game like Pax Romana II. There are a lot of old grognards around the world with money to spare that are starved for games like that.

During the last few days I have searched for info about Pax. Most of what was there is now gone, but a few screens here and some posts there did remind me of how great the game really was. Making a true sequel with the very intricate political system Pax had might be beyond the AGE engines limit as it stands now, but perhaps modules could be added to it.

Meanwhile, I have just ordered a copy of the original Pax from Amazon. I will have to give it a try again.. :)

I am surprised that Amazon is still selling this game and wonder who gets the money, as I never saw it ...and the last owner went bankrupt...all for Amazon's pocket so it seems

As I said before, I agree finding the support for the project is not the difficult issue (although not simple), it's finding the right person and time to do it...the code is much too old now and everything almost would need to be redone...a full time job for 2-3 years with 2-3 staff by itself....would require 400,000 € at the very least... not sure the game would EVER make that money back

I remember a board game (well, mostly cards and chits) that had the same (?) name and subject.... is this the same game?

No, the one you refer to was a boardgame from Richard Berg that was made much after my own PC game. The boardgame with the closest behavior is an old Avalon Hill title called 'Republic of Rome'

Wut?

Tue Jul 15, 2014 1:41 pm

Hi!
