Your top 5 all time games

I got Skyrim on discount some days ago but I don't know which mods should be set in. Any recommendation? I want a harder, more realistic game with non dynamic monster leveling.

That's why I like German Rpg's more. Economy system and levelling much harder . Risen 1 is good example.
I did try mage at master level in Skriym it is way out of balance. Some enemies way to much strong,some are very easy.

but Strategic Command and Hearts of Iron I&II, I played them significantly.

Most probably you have also played latest Strategic command WW1 call to arms scenario. I have 2 pbem games going and it is excellent. Maybe better than latest Matrix's Commander Great War.

Sorry, never tryed a single mod so far, I have played Skyrym a year ago...
Anyhow is time to start another game and there are two place to donwload mods, Steam and Nexus, surely I will add the graphics ones.

Based on what I'm playing over the past few years, here is my list of PC games:

* AACW, mix of single play and PBEM. Never fails to satisfy.
* Medieval 2: Third Age Mod 3.1.
* Commander Europe at War: Grand Strategy Mod 2.1. AI only useful to learn game mechanics, best played by PBEM. Like AACW it is a long game, though it too has scenarios that are shorter.
* Master of Orion 1. MOO 2 was prettier but I found it tedious later in the game and playing MOO1 with weaker faction on hardest setting was quite challenging.
* XCOM: UFO Defense. This one really has that "just one more turn" aspect that gets me in hot water.

As to Pocus' point about not finding a WW2 game that hits the "sweet spot", I say thank goodness such a game does not exist, otherwise I fear my marriage would fail and I'd be begging on the street corner.

Eador Genesis, a Ukranian game released in 2009 that was just re-released by GOG.com with a very good english translation, has my attention right now. I'm either going to love or hate this game... Even on "beginner" level this baby is hard.

Oh you are right, Master of Orion is definitively one of the great game series I like (opus I and II. There is no such thing as opus III, no there is not).

Playing Eador right now - reason for no update on one of my AAR - and the game is very, very interesting. Definitely the genre of deepness you could find in games made 15 years ago. Lots of flaws, too. It could use soem heavy fine-tuning, but the base concepts are extremely refreshing and well-thought.

fascinating thread. I guess my favourites more or less reflect my route back into strategy gaming (I dropped out when paper and cardboard was not very feasible due to moving flat/country on a regular basis) so - Civilisation (esp I & III), EU2 (which got me into historical strategy games again) though EU3 is oodles better, RoP (which got me into AGEOD), Warlock (Master of the Arcane) too addictive for words and PoN (far too addictive for words)

The PC was one where you picked the components and then they (pcspecialist UK) assemble them. £850 of junk.
Plays up with other graphic intensive games as well - shuts itself down and refuses to turn on again
for a variable amount of time. Very frustrating. I have sent it back but no fix so far. One of those
annoying problems that doesn't happen all the time so difficult to prove.

What you describe strongly sugests a faulty or underpowered power source. Check that it is rated at least 500W, and if necessary have it replaced before anything else.

AJE and Baldur's Gate keep me going The power supply should be fine as it's 650W - but maybe it's faulty. It's actually been OK for the past year or so even for graphic intensive games - but it has decided to go back to its old ways with Skyrim. When I sent it back they just installed the latest drivers (which I had already done and sent it back to me saying it was probably a software conflict of some kind and to re-install Windows if it happens again). Don't have much of a feeling that that would help as it was a fresh install when I got it and it didn't work then. Bit annoyed that a 3 year warrenty is fairly meaningless if they just blame the software/drivers - what can you do - they may even be right.

1. Ms. Pac-man still wins. It is a bit different from regular Pacman, but I think it is better. I remember as a little kid watching my father be a pro at this game. This is one of the only video games he was good at because it was released when he was a kid, so it was the only one we played together. Now I can wow my little cousins with my own skills just how he used to amaze me when I was small.

2. AACW. For obvious reasons.

3. Chess. A historically significant game that never gets old (I know, a stupid pun, but I tried.) Probably a game that will never go out of style.

4. Scrabble. The only game I never beat my father at.

5. Sid Meier's Civilization. I only have Civilization 3, but I assume all of them are just as awesome.

If there was a number 6 it would be the Halo series. I know most of my elders here disagree, but what can I say? I need to act like a teenager sometime. I truly am a product of the 2000s.

Been playing the Warband sequel to Mount & Blade. Love it. In fact, if the overall depth to the game wasn't so limited, I think it would be nudging its way into my top ten. Excellent gameplay and it's got a great sandbox quality to it. When I first heard of it, it seemed like too much of a Lord of the Rings ripoff. But I was happily mistaken. It's a great game series. Tons of replay value too.

I got a similar problem last year, the computer would freeze and refuse to reboot for varying amounts of time, and while I never really tracked down the problem with complete certainty, I'm fairly sure that is was one of the Ram modules sometimes getting slightly loose. I ended up replacing motherboard, ram and processor, and haven't had the problem since.

mmm... it is quite difficult to define a list of 5 games, like many already said... I will try to put games from different categories on the list... but no FPS... hehe

1) Championship Manager/Football Manager: I was just a little kid playing "PC Futbol" (the one about the spanish Liga) when I found out a game done by Eidos Interactive that allowed you to play with the English League.... My GOD!!! I think I haven't spent more time on any game than on these games. The amount of MP games, the competitions, the games against my brothers (we played it almost daily, trying to beat each other ) ... a huge ammount of memories playing these game.
2) Civilization Series: It is more or less like the previous case, I was just a kid when I was playing with NUCLEAR WEAPONS on Civ1!!! (I only had 11/12 years)
I will include here the Colonization games too... I really liked trying to liberate my country from the oppresing european power.
3) WIA+AACW+ROP: I do not include here PON because I have never played it to really have fun... I was always looking for a new bug or just testing it to see if everything worked as planned...
Surprisingly, NCP is not on the list just because it didn't had a campaign... I really loved the map and some scenarios, but without a full campaign (even if it was a sandbox campaign) it really lacks "something".
4) Wing Commander: yes, I have played these games... I was young (not a kid anymore ) when a game about spaceships blown up my mind!... it was the year 1994 and Wing Commander 3 came out... you were a character in a game that played like a movie... you could even saw some real Kilrathi for the first time!!! (well, an actor disguised as a cat flying a space ship ). It was just unbelievable for me. I had replayed that game hundreds of times... including the "Privateer" spin off that came later.
5) Fallout 2-3-NV: The "RPGer" that I have inside couldn't leave some RPG game outside this list... so, here they are. So many options, so many things to do... so little time to play.
5') Mass Effect 1+2+3: Yes, I have added another 5, because I couldn't decide between them... Mass Effect was for me the first Action+RPG from BioWare that really worked, a great idea and an awesome design. Each chapter on the saga improved the previous game... not like the horrible Dragon Age 2 (I hated it soooo much), these were just amazing. I can't remember another time were I was waiting for the final chapter of a saga like I had with ME3. I even like the end of ME3 (some hated it ).

Many games were left outside of the list to try to keep it simple, like Panzer General series, Close Combat series, Gran Turismo (yes, I like driving simulators too), SWOTL, The Total War Series (I have played them all!!!), etc...

This is a sort of top 5 list. The first two in it I remember fondly because they were my route back into wargaming, my only previous experience was a brief miniatures one when I was 14ish.
My first computer wargame was Microprose's Fields of Glory, the Ligny scenario was good fun....
Then moved onto the Talonsoft efforts, Waterloo, Gettysburg etc.
Panzer General was good fun as well.
Dragoon/Horse and Musket was very enjoyable too.
My favourite games though are all the AGEOD variations.

Definitely, watching flowing text lines were marvelous. Beckham run with the ball skip past opponent, skip another and another again and shoots and goal !. How the he can do that? But It was a joy to play.

Yes, great memories about those "text lines matches"... I remember we felt like watching a real football match with my brothers... but we were just reading a bunch of text lines... it is incredible how our imagination helped us to love that game!
I remember once we managed to play 2 seasons with 6 human players (me, my two brothers and 3 friends)... we gathered all together on my room and only had 5 minutes to do things on your team... then you had to pass the chair to the next one in line... awesome!!

Glad that I have similar feelings about C. Manager.
Definitely that game. I didn't worry about if the world burned or not in mass effect. Clementine and Lee story were more touchy. I wonder if Lilly come up next episode.

Hobbes: Mass effect 3 is much better in combat and overall very good game from previous versions. But for story start from first version.

TES Morrowind: The best TES game and my favourite rpg of all time
Dreamfall: Completly fell in love with the characters,setting, story and brilliant atmosphere
Zeus: Master of Olympus: I have a fan of city building games and this has been my favourite of them all, just love creating and managing a greek city state.
Warcraft 3: Great story, great mechanics and great setting, my favourite RTS
Civ IV: No need for explanation I think

I was a bit put off by comments on Amazon that said even if you have the disks you still have to download the game - is this the case?

Yes, the gameplay is similar, but I find ME2 gameplay more improved in comparison to ME1... the game looks and feel better... even if they are similar, I liked ME2 more than ME1.
About the download, I bought ME1 and ME2 on Steam (almost together)... but then I bought ME3 on my PS3 (online, on the PS Store)... so I bought the complete edition of ME2 on PS3 to replay it again before getting into the final chapter (it included all the DLCs that "completes" the story betweem ME2 and ME3, I recommend you get the DLCs too because some things are not explained if you finish ME2 main story and then go directly to ME3... nothing serious, but it is better to know all).
So, no idea about the disc thing... I actually downloaded all the ME games...

About the ME3 end, yes, it was "improved", not "corrected"... now it gives you more info about what really happens... still, I think it is good and the complains are exaggerated...

If you have already played ME2, it may be a bit useless to go back to ME1 now, since you already know what is going on in the galaxy... all the "surprises" are already known for you.
But, for the sake of "completition", it may be good to go back... so, you know how Sheppard became the "Commander Sheppard"

I carried my ME1 player through the entire story... that's really a good move from the developers... and I did the same thing, "humans first".
