Sieges.

Tue Sep 25, 2012 10:33 pm

The siege dynamic leads me to a question. The AI will besiege a lot of cities with a small force, even a cavalry only force which cannot assault the city. The defending units stay locked so you can't do anything with them even when it appears that they might equal or outnumber the besiegers. They eventually wither due to lack of supply. Why are the garrison units unable to try and break the siege? I can't see a garrison commander sit and decide to let his men starve when they might equal or outnumber their beseigers.
Thanks for any opinions.
P.S. Great game!

i many cases, especially of you get additional urban militia spawned, they are not....

you can use them outside the city. just drag and drop

moving them out of the city is not effected by the locked status, nor by blockade of movements. if you face only a AUX unit of similar, get them out, you cannot lose more than by starved troops. however, on your own risk

after the battle they are also not longer locked.

however, prone to throw them into disarray.

These difficulties accumulate and produce a friction which no man can imagine exactly who has not seen War . . . in War, through the influence of an infinity of petty circumstances, which cannot properly be described on paper, things disappoint us, and we fall short of the mark.‘

Oh, good to know! I also assumed that since the garrison units are locked, you cannot move them outside the city. No more getting besieged in Rome by one plebs unit because of food riots. :D

Thanks for the info and the link. Seeing the locked status I never put them outside the city.

Also (to be confirmed, rules abound and my memory can betray me) but a force that is taking hits while besieged should also unlock.

Activated simply because of taking hits during a siege? No, doesn't happen currently. They only activate if they are directly attacked, ie. assaulted.
