well, normal range of a Gladius is... 50–56 cm...
see, it goes that way:
the focus is discipline plus assault value. legions have the advantage of the "range" for the Pilum, means having [color="#FFFF00"]offensive/defensive fire[/color] as well, while a simple Phalanx has not.
however, you cannot build many "ranged" units, thus the point gets neglect-able.
but the few in-game "ranged"-units have often for instance a skirmisher ability adding to the stack.
find them in game, use them one per each stack at least. some are obvious, some hidden in special regions which have to be seized, some will be at hand by event... depending on scenario and faction
...not paid by AGEOD.
however, prone to throw them into disarray.
