Why will you play AACW?

Wed Apr 11, 2007 7:46 am

Gamers play for many reasons - to step into the boots of their favourite historical figure, to bring history to life, to try out some strategy they think could have ended the war sooner, just for fun, etc.

With a game as good as AACW promises to be, I'd be interested to know how forum members will play it - and why!

I will play as the Confederacy conducting an agressive defence in order to right the wrongs of history.

I think with all historical simulation games there's an urge to try to do better: to correct the mistakes that were made historically and show what a superb general or president you might have made, given the opportunity.

"Rome wasn't built in a day? I wasn't in charge of that job!"

For this reason, it tends to be more interesting to play the side that lost historically: there's more obvious scope for doing better. However, in fact there's some interest in playing either side of the ACW -- especially when your opponent is competent.

I think that goes without saying. Why else would anyone buy a game? But each person has his own concept of fun. That's why different people choose different games, and some people don't play games at all.

I must confess that I am more historian than gamer when I play - I want to witness the events that took place. It's usually on the 3rd or 4th play that I start to move into 'what if' territory.

I like History and consequently wargames mainly because we can explore "what if" situations on such games (and I also liked the first game of Ageod :coeurs: )

As the two sides have different goals and also different ways to win, I will play both sides on different PBEMs :niark:

I love history and i love underdogs. I've always been a great fan of the confederate generals: Lee, "Stonewall" Jackson and Longstreet.

So i usually play the Confederacy in CW games :dada:

I like to be given the same set of historical dilemmas and see how I can an improve or even change the outcome.

I really don't care for games that are set in a historical period/theme but have no historical/realistic decision making - tradeoff process to consider (i.e. HOI or EUII).

What I am not looking forward to is the "we can always release a patch later" quality control that has crippled the PC gaming industry. If I wanted a job as a game debugger, I would have paid more attention in math class.

Because i :coeurs: Blueberry and Les Tuniques Bleues. If french speaking european adults know about American Civil War it's partly due to them.

And finally, games from AGEOD are very well designed :king:

Immerse in history as deeply as I can without actually leaving my house. Be faced with complex, realistic problems that the decisionmakers back then had to face. Get a feeling for the fact that war is not just moving counters on a map. I am not yet through with the manual but I am already thrilled by the importance of the concept of national morale.

I have enjoyed BoA from the moment I started playing it and this looks like being even better. And I have always been fascinated with the ACW. Also, judging from the screenshots, the maps will be as beautiful as those in BoA and, like these, seem to have a slight in-period touch, though I can't really put my finger on it. Anyway I love maps. :innocent:

well, I'd like to buy this game because it looks fantastic, it is developed by ageod and I like to support independent game developers. But I can't overcome my reluctance to buy one more US-centric game after BoA, For Liberty and Forge of Freedom. I think I've enough of this stuff for the next few years and will wait for vainglory of nations

why nobody does design ever a game of spanish civil war??? :p leure:

I'm drawn to just about any historical strategy game, but particularly enjoy those that pay attention to detail and provide a deep and rich game experience.
A well designed interface and challenging AI are also at the top of my list. The ACW is a popular period to wargame and for good reason. AGEod meets most of my criteria in its game designs (the option of a detailed combat mode would be a nice addition) and they produce a quality product with great support.

I'm looking forward to other periods and places being covered. Anything set primarily in Europe between the Renaissance and the Revolution would be awesome. Given the popularity of the Napoleonic era, however, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the subject of their next title - and I'm sure they'd do an excellent job of it too!
