Controling units is a pain the...

Tue Jun 07, 2011 1:41 pm

I may be the only one with this problem, yet I have found this more detracting than anything else in the game. I'm talking about moving and combining units, well, anything to do with units. I need to be extra careful and even being gingerly with either the portraits or the tabs doesn't always mean the game will do what I want it to. For example, when I wish to merge two units together, the one getting moved, sometimes (well, quite a lot), gets a move order to some nearby province, or not even that. When I try to move units, their commands end up somewhere else all together. Now, I haven't had the same problem with the demo (at least I don't remember) and I'll try a couple of tricks I know sometimes work.

In fact, what I want to know is if someone else is experiencing the same difficulties. On a side note, VGN is truly the strategy game of the decade. It may only be 2011, yet I find it hard to imagine anyone topping what you have done (except if you make a steampunk mod, then I'm building a monument in your honour).

Mars conquest isn't ( ah Space 1889...) but a Steampunk mod on Gibson novel is certainly doable...

the more I play this the more I become convinced that RUS is one of the best strategy games I have ever played... and I have played many since the mid 80's. The AI in this mod is at level with Sid Meier's best efforts.

Always lock groups before combining.

Once you learn it will be a breeze.

Wait, you can't combine units while locked, can you? Otherwise all my units are locked. Plus, that's beside the point. Even when moving there are problems. As said, I'll check it out some more. In the end, I'd rather eat my hair than let this game go.

True but if you use the lock all as standard then it becomes easier to unlock just those you need combining. Will save you some headaches.

I know how you feel but once you learn it will stick, plus you can use the knowledge in other age games.

Trust me, I've been using this little trick since I started playing Ageod games, oh, so many years ago. Thanks anyhow. I'm certain that it will help newer players.

The Delete key will cancel the last plotted move, it is a nice and quick fix for when you accidentally drop a unit on the southern edge of the map instead of on that other damn tab. :bonk:

I am having a similar problem, though not as bad. I have thousands of hours playing on this system but it is much harder to combine units the way I want. Some of the unit tabs do not show, and when you try to move one tab to another tab, you get a picture of a unit. However, I finally learned to hold the unit that you want to add to a unit over the target until it turns transparent, and then it will work.

I wish they had kept the old system, which worked perfectly. Why fix what was not broken?

But the missing tabs is the biggest problem, though they will reappear if you move enough units out of the area.
