Danzig event + Russian invasion westward

Sun May 15, 2011 10:15 pm

I know there are few people left still playing RoP but I will try my luck anyway.

I am currently playing a very entertaining PBEM. It is the summer of 1757 and my Russian troops have just started the siege of Koenigsberg.

This is the first time I am this far into an Austrian campaign under the current patch. Moreover, it is only my third game as Austrian.
As a matter of fact, it was Narwhal's excellent AAR (and butt-kicking - sorry, Baris ;) ) that convinced me that the Austrian side holds its own challenges.

Here are my problems:

1) How does the Danzig event work out?

As Austrian I payed the 5 EP to get a supply-base in the city. But I see no change. Does Danzig serve as a depot? Shouldn't there be a supply stack visible in the supply window?
How can the Prussian affect Danzig's status?

2) Is an invasion westward with the Russian forces sustainable under the current beta patch?

Under the old patch the Russian war effort was doomed by supply shortages in Eastern Prussia. It was impossible to sustain more than a rudimentary force in Koenigsberg during the winter. Has that changed now?

Has anyone actually tried moving the Russian forces further west (to Kolberg or Stettin)? Your experience would be a very welcome help.

P.S.: Is it unfair to ask for advice here? If so please say so.

I have enjoyed Rise of Prussia, as well as your own comments across several forums. I have, however, not encountered the the Danzig event as you describe it. However, you have inspired me to revisit this scenario from curiosity about the changes.
Interesting things always happen with a patch. I play BoA2 endlessly and have loved and hated some of the surprises from new patches.
It may be a day or a week, but I will investigate your questions, with my skills and some luck, I will try to replicate. I assume you are playing against AI. If not, let me know.

My careless reading. You are doing PBM.
Will try and play as you do.

1) The Prussian player gets and event too and if he decides to pay off danzig austrian choice doesn't matter (but if he doesn't it does)

2) Build at least lvl 2 depots - up the one created at border and build one more in the middle between it and koeningsberg. After you capture it you will probably want to build one more before elbling and one in the prussian pommerania (those will probably be lvl 1in order to preserve wagons). Attacking Kolbling and sttetin should be possible in the next year - and unless prussian player puts up ressistance you shouldn't send all your forces at once (at least not before you capture stettin).Remember to move depleated wagons towards the depots. An interesting thing is that if you control lubeck you can build swedish bateux in it (and they can be a lifesaver when it comes to transfering wagons quickly).

You can reduce your supply usagage by transfering all the cossacks west asap - giving you a huge lead in scouting and land control on all fronts (winter them with swedes).

The last beta patch was a lot better regarding Russian supply, it was supporting Russian forces far to the west of Danzig if you built depots in the right places. ;)

The Danzig event I can't remember exactly how it works, but I think both sides get an option to try and influence the town. If one side takes the support option then it doesn't matter what the other side decides. But I can't remember which way round it is.. :neener:
Maybe someone else can help.

Edit I see i was beaten to the post :D

Anazagar, Ebbingford,

thank you for your help and the excellent explanation.

Anazagar, I think you are right about the Danzig event. I got a message this turn stating that the Prussian had bribed the city. No supplies for me. :(

Koenigsberg is mine now. And the supply stocks look indeed a lot better than what I was used to from the old version. I will need those Russians since the Prussian army fought their way out of a trap I had set for them.

We shouldn't forget that Russia had to give up east prussia two times because of the lack of supply. So it really shouldn't be easy to march to Berlin for them.
