Athena. I do have Polk over in Scott, MO with a sizable force, but I'm affraid if he leaves then it'll open the door for McLellan's command just over the river to the east. I'll see if I can combine some of my militia forces and line regiments to form another force and try and crush them. Thanks.

Question: I have A.S. Johnston and a brigade west of a city I want to take. Just to the south is a force of several more brigades.

Is it possible to combine this force and order them to move and attack the city in the same turn? I'd hate to have to burn a turn just moving him down to combine with the foce, then have to burn another turn ordering them to move up and attack the city.

You can drag the other brigades onto the AS Johnston stack and order ASJ to attack on his own, but it's not guaranteed that the reinforcements will merge with ASJ before he gets there. Order the reinforcements to move by rail if you can.

Ah ok. I'll give that a shot, and that's good to know for future reference. Thanks.

How long does a campaign take?

Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:38 am

From all the reviews I've read, it appears Ageod's ACW is the best strategic civil wargame available.

I purchased it several months ago, but was put off by its apparent complexity, but I think I've digested the rules and tutorials enough to go ahead and take the plunge into the campaign game.

So how many hours/days/weeks/months will it take to finish a full campaign game?

Depends on your style and who you are playing. It will take a while. If you can sit through it, you can run through 4-5 turns a day vs. the computer. In PBEM, it is usually 1-2 per day. There's 24 turns in a year, so it would take 1/2 to 1 month per game year in PBEM.

Stay with it, it is a great game you will enjoy.
Remember - The beatings will continue until morale improves.

100 % agreement. I'm a fairly new convert too and i just love the layers of this game that only become apparent the further you go in playing it.
This forum is a huge help coming to grips with it.

I got on a torrent site and looked for "American Civil War game" and found this. I screwed around on version 1.02 or whatever the pirate copy I had was. I then decided it was awesome and bought it. (don't worry, I'm not a dirty pirate anymore ;) ) I think I played 2-3 grand campaigns in the first week. I did 50+ turns/day sometimes. Long story short, play as much as you want. The grand campaign is 115 turns long, so just divide how many turns a day you do by that.

As for PBEM, I played for almost exactly 1 year before even attempting it. I could've started earlier, but I had never done a PBEM and was scared I'd get my butt kicked.

So Major Cleburn, how was your first PBEM?

If there was any PBEM wargame I'd attempt to play, it would be this one.

But as a raw newb, I don't think I'd be worth playing against :D

Better than I could've expected. My opponent was pretty raw too and I was afraid to go after Washington, but I won during the election of 1864 event. I would recommend playing another new player. 1 PBEM will really change the way you play.

I've been thinking about finally trying my hand at a PBEM game but I keep getting lazy on trying to find an opponent that would suit my playing needs. I don't think a lot of people would settle for 1 turn every other day. ;)

Come to think of it, is there a step-by-step guide somewhere on setting up a PBEM game including some tips to lower frustrations?

I'm playing a 1 turn every other day game right now. Post a message on the PBEM forum and see if you get any bites. As for procedure, you just send the host your .ord file. If you're the host, just send back their sides .trn. Once you play 1 or 2 turns you'll get the hang of it.

As hosting player you should also send the "replay" file to your opponent. Using the replay feature allow sometimes to better understand what has just happened in the turn.

hey kayapo,

1 turn every other day would suit me very well kayapo. I'm a fair newbie myself, I've toyed with the game, but my only real experience is a very slow PBEM I'm playing with a friend atm.

The only thing I would say is that I'm reasonably busy at uni and otherwise, so it's possible 1 turn every other day would not always be doable. If you can live with that, shoot me a message some time.
