Having difficult posting

Wed Feb 23, 2011 4:48 pm

Hi, I'm new here. No matter what I try to do (except search) I get an error message saying I'm not allowed to do it. I can log in OK and my name appears at the bottom of the screen along with others currently online. The Posting Rules box says I can do all those things, but it never works.

I thought I'd try again just to see what happens. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Edit: obviously worked this time. Reminds me of taking my car into the shop to have that strange new noise diagnosed: it doesn't make it then.

It always works when the plumber shows up.

Thank you, Sirs. Spammers, trolls and the uncivil are the bane of every forum. I still don't know why I couldn't post replies or start new threads, but now that it works I'm sure I'll reach 10 posts in no time. I've got at least that many ignorant questions.

Play the game.

Ask Qs.

Play some more.

Ask more Qs.

Rinse & repeat. Anything I know is largely due to 'enlightened play experience', the enlightenment coming from good posters. I would recommend the Manual, of course, there's also an Addendum to the same by Dixiecrat and Aphrodite Mae (stickied), the Wiki (stickied), and about five or six other stickied threads here and in the Strategy forum that are very, very helpful. I still go back and reread these stickys.

Read, ponder, play - then play a human - this AI is a truly different and remarkable AI, but still, a crafty human...

again, welcome to the best game model of the Civil War in the known universe.

Posting is still being squirrelly; sometimes works, sometimes not. I'll try it with a quote, which worked before.

Since I can't alter my profile yet, please allow me to introduce myself (I'm a man of wealth and taste...no, no). I'm a retired college lecturer (biology) with a lifelong amateur interest in the American Civil War. I've played many ACW games, both paper-and-cardboard and computer and am looking forward to playing the best. I live in central NC, not far from the Bentonville and Averasboro battlefields.

Edit: Hey, it worked! Log in, post with quote, get error screen, log in again, post; edit post, get error screen, log in again, post edited version... Sorry to waste people's time, but I've had a "devil" of a time getting this to work. I hope in future to make some more positive contributions to the forum. :)

Welcome to the forums. If you like Civil War games, then yes, tihis will be a welcome addition to your collections.

I have played AACW, Forge of Freedom, and GG WBTS and of them all, well, I'm not sure yet, but I kind of like FoF but I also like this one. I'm not BIG into FoFs detailed battles, so a game like this where the general is basically fighting the battle for you, you just have to get him to it with the best, most trained, most cohesive and supplied army is really how I like it.

Hi, deguerra. I get a full-page forum message (vBulletin) telling me I am not logged in or do not have authorization to access this page. I got it just now when I tried to reply to your post. When I press submit, I predict I'll get it again. When I log in again on that page, the message will be posted. Let's see...

Edit: Yes, same thing. I'll deal with it until admin declares me worthy. I understand the reason. Had to log in again to post this edit.

Hi, hgilmer, I played them all too. FoF seemed too coarse in time and distance to accurately reflect ACW operational combat, plus the "Civilization"-style tech trees seemed totally artificial. GG WBTS has a facinating game engine, but the month/turn scale and limited number of regions again did not reflect the degree of operational control I wanted. I can't believe I saved the best for last, but here I am.

Gray Lensman (that name takes me back in time!), I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time, but I just had the same experience trying to reply to your post. I'm not trying to do anything the error screen says I can't do. I can't post a reply or a new thread without getting that screen and going through the procedure I outlined above (post, error screen, log in again, resubmit; repeat if you want to edit). I think this is my tenth post so maybe the situation will change. Can I have an avatar then?

If not, I think you might be having issues with something to do with possibly your own system interfering. Maybe too high a Firewall setting, anti-virus interference... Just guessing but no one else has reported the kind of problems you're posting which leads me to believe it might be local.

Thank you, Gray Lensman. I don't have a firewall but I'll try turning off my anti-virus. It's never caused a problem before, but there's always a first time. I appreciate your help and good luck with the flame wars.
