Home of the Alamo

Sat May 23, 2009 5:51 pm

My hometown is San Antonio, it's there offmap for a few scenarios in AACW, I think.

But it's also there in WiA, under Spanish control, of course.

And a tip of the stetson to husky; I lived in Dallas for many years.

Ciao Gustfire,
Thanks for the nod, but I'm from Ben Wheeler, Texas. I love San Antonio, though. I really liked the river walk and the Alamo. I went to school on Lackland AFB back in 1989.

Ciao Gray,
I read your post to Pat that you were going to correct some locales on the map. I know it doesn't matter, but Athens, is actually in Henderson County, but I noticed that there is a Athens in Athens and then a Henderson County. I know I'm nitpicking, but Athens should be in Henderson. The region just west of Henderson should be "Van Zandt," and if a city should be there, it should be Canton (the county seat). However, you could make it Ben Wheeler, if you really wanted - (your secret would be safe with me).

By the way, Van Zandt county is also known as the "Free County" because they voted to seceed from the Confederacy because no one owned slaves and they were mad that they had to leave the United States!!

Yes, my town is on the map, but it's not a cool Civil War town (no battles or significant history from the period...save for a large Union Prison camp). But it is a source of Union conscripts in AACW....so I got that going for me....which is nice.

I'm from Abington, PA, which is just south of Doylestown (on that little road between Philadelphia and Doylestown). I'm assuming that road is supposed to be Rte 611.

And my current home is probably next to the cactus in the upper-left portion of the Southwest box.

Ciao tagwyn,
Hey, I was stationed at NAS Memphis (Millington) and both of my children were born in the Naval Hospital out there (if it still exists). How is Memphis now? We left 16 years ago!
Actually, those are my actual medals/ribbons that I earned while in the US Navy. My youngest showed me how to put them up, since it seemed like everyone else was so decorated, I figured I would post mine (going to war twice helps with "chest candy").

Ciao GustFire,
Thank you very much. I was (and am) very blessed by the Good Lord to have been a part of the finest military in the world (just slightly ahead of the French Military, of course).
It was my pleasure to serve!

Tucson...

Mon Jun 15, 2009 7:10 am

I have lived in Tucson, Arizona before and very recently went back to visit family still living there. Having noticed the city on the edge of the game map I was curious what the involvement of the city really was during the Civil War. As it turns out the US Army removed most troops garrisoned in the region in order to bolster the eastern forces early in the war. The Confederacy shortly after claimed the region, with Tucson itself occupied in February of 1862. In response to this the Union sent the "California Column" (1400 troops under Brg General Carleton) towards Tucson. Hearing of this, the small Confederate garrison went northwest to intercept.
The result of this climaxed on April 15, 1862 when at Picacho Peak, roughly 50 miles NW of Tucson, an advance party of the 1st California Cavalry met with pickets of the Confederate garrison. The Johnnys had lad an ambush on the higher ground and the Billys split their cavalry force in an attempt to encircle the ambush. The result of this conflict?.....
One wing of the cavalry was fired upon by ambushing Rebs, wounding 2 men, the other cavalry wing then engaged the Rebs capturing 3 men. Emboldened by this small success the Union Lieutenant ordered a charge which came under heavy Rebel fire, wounding 1 and killing 3 Union troops, the Lieutenant among them. All were buried on the field.
The 2 sides exchanged insignificant fire afterwards until the Union cavalry withdrew NW to their main force and later the Confederates withdrew to Tucson which (due to logistical difficulties) was soon after abandoned by the Confederates prior to the arrival of the California Column. The engagement was about an hour and a half long.
I decided to visit the site on my trip to Tucson, inspired by a long felt appreciation for military history and a new found appreciation for our Civil War history, and by connection our country's history. I now have several ideas in mind for future battlefield visitations...time off work allowing :neener:
Here's a pic of the field, which occured largely in the pass of these hills, mostly below the base, of course. Thank you for the inspiration, AACW, and a cool detour from a sweet trip.

Well, I must say that my city's name does appear on the map... But really, I live thousands of miles away... Does it seem weird, it doesn´t? :D

The explanation is easy: I live in Cadiz, Andalucia, Spain. Cadiz is one of the oldest European cities and it is well known for its Carnival. Cadiz was one of the few places where Napoleon Bonaparte was not able to enter, during the invasion of Spain in 1808... :winner: :D

Of course you are all invited! :coeurs:

A big hug to everyone from cadiz! :hat:

In the case of my city, I like to know what was the relationship between early settlers and my city to put its name. Cadiz (county seat of Harrison County, Ohio) was founded in 1803 AD and my city Cádiz (Andalucia, Spain) was founded in 1104 BC... ;)

Was born in Winchester, VA. My brother and I would occasionally dig up mini's in our front yard while building dirt tracks for our matchbox cars.

Great game this. Great history that.

Yep, Alachua, FL. The town on the map, Newnansville, doesn't exist anymore though (We've got Newnans lake though.) For that matter, I wonder why it was put there. Wiki says that though it was the county seat until 1854, by the civil war all county functions had already been moved to Gainesville.

Maybe you've heard of...

Prince George's County? My home region tends to be an important consideration in AACW games, although my home town itself wasn't founded until the 1930's.

I currently live in Portsmouth, VA, the home of the Gosport/Norfolk Navy Yard. In AACW, Portsmouth is cruelly lacking while Norfolk gets all the fame, although it was then Portsmouth that was strategically important. It is also rather interesting that Norfolk and Hampton are adjacent to the James Estuary in AACW and not to Hampton Roads, as in real life.

My stomping ground for some of my life is on

Sat Feb 05, 2011 2:54 am

the illustrated tutorial.

When the tutorial talks about "the small town of Madisonville", well, I lived in a smaller town than that about 6 miles away to the West of it called Mortons Gap. I see Hopkinsville there, too, and Hopkinsville was where we used to go to "go to the big city that has more than 1 movie theater".

Very familiar with that area.
