more random questions :-)

Fri Mar 02, 2007 7:18 pm

How does the event system work ? are these random events that may or may not happen, or do the events always happen and at predetermined times?

Just read the bit of info on commerce raiders and blockade runners. When your blockade runner reaches europe do you have the option to choose wether you want money or war supplies as payment? this would give you some more strategic flexibility.

The confederates used mines (torpedoes :sourcil: ) to defend their ports ( and with some success), can we do the same in this game ?

I saw in a screenshot that you can capture rifles from the enemy after a battle, are these converted to war supplies after the battle? or used to upgrade your troops weapons (in case of superior rifles)?. Also can you capture artillery? and how can you benefit from those (superior) guns?.

The confederacy was rather early and succesfull in implamenting general conscription. Will this be reflected in the game? for instance by imposing less penalties when using the conscript option?

I seem to think of more questions the more i read about this game, so i hope you don't mind :dada:

The only one I can answer at the moment (Most of that has yet to be included in the beta, so I haven't seen it), is that captured artillery is denoted by a differently shaded unit. So basically you capture the unit and it is now yours, and is included as a part of your force.

Most historical events are bound to happen, but with a variation around the exact period. Some are randomized though, like Lincoln assassination which can fail and only lead to Lincoln being wounded!

The blockade runner process is abstracted once you get into the Blockade Box, you are supposed to run your little affair successfully until you retreat yourself or are sunk. We first wanted to have the player make one run and then return, but this would have been tedious to do that every turn for each ships. While the runner is in the box, he get you one war supply a turn.

Mines (torpedoes as they were called) has been considered, we even have a NATO symbol for them, but for now we prefer to abstract them by augmenting the firepower of riverine fortresses and harbors.

As Lee says, you can either capture whole units, and they keep their type, or you can grab miscellaneous equipments on the battlefield, and this is abstracted by giving you more war supply in your pool. The Confederate is really fond of that, as he is always looking to grab any war supply he can :)

The Confederacy start the game with 300,000 conscripts in reserve, which is proportionnaly a bigger proportion of his population compared to the Union. The initial mustering is already taken into account, but you can add more by proclaiming new draft of attracting new volunteers: as the CSA morale is higher than the Union at start, they also get a better ratio of volunteers compared to the North (even if the actual number is lower, as the population count is much more in favor of the Yankees!)

Hope it helps.

I noticed that harbours can have different levels, does this mean you can build harbours to bigger levels?. Also do higher level harbours have more defences?.

As to the firepower of harbours, do these have inherent artillery batteries? or is this abstracted? and if so can they be upgraded?. Can you place artillery units in them just like with forts.

Finally do 300000 conscripts translate in to the 150 points that i saw in the confederate conscript pool in the AAR?

Thanks :dada:

no, harbors stay the same troughout the game. To defend them you have coastal artilleries units that you can build, or fortress and permanent earthworks.

My bad about the conscript, these 300 points of conscripts don't means 300,000 men, they mean 30,000, as a regiment need 10 points to be levied. But you can trigger up to 3 options every 6 months to get more men, so conscripts can be raised in masse should you need more, at the cost of a national morale loss.

" up to 3 options..." Does it mean that in the same turn you can call for volunteers and make a conscription.
