A rant.

Sat May 22, 2010 6:01 pm

Pardon my venting, but I spent my money, I purchased this post:

This is one of the most unprofessional game releases I have ever purchased.

I'm a loyal AGEOD customer. BoA, BoA2, the Civil War game... bought them all, loved them all. I'm also a veteran gamer, and I understand that it can take a long time for small publishers to bring a game up to speed-- I waited *years* before I could enjoy Hearts of Iron, I know how to be patient :) .

When World War One was first released (in 2008!), I read the nightmares, and stayed away. I figured, they'll patch it right eventually. That point never seemed to arrive.

Last week, I discovered the Gold version. I assumed that meant all the bugs were worked out, all the complexities were streamlined, and I was finally safe to spend my money. After a week of play, I couldn't be more wrong.

The game crashes in the tutorials. It crashes in the small scenarios. It crashes in the campaign. It crashes on interception; it crashes on battles. It freezes constantly.

If there's a secret to making the game work, it's not posted in this forum. I've followed every piece of advice. Tweaked the configuration settings, shut off sound-- sound! in a game!-- excluded it from my antivirus, and so on, and so forth. My system is new, every driver on my system is updated. I've tried the Gold with the beta patch, no difference.

Anyway, I *guess* I will hang around a little bit longer to see if this gets ironed out, because I would really like to play this game. But I must profess, I'm terribly disappointed in the quality of this product, particularly after the excellent games (and support) I've purchased from AGEOD in years past.

(P.S. Completely unrelated to the technical issues, but still of concern: could you have made this game *any more* complex? Also, whoever wrote the manuals should find a new hobby. I'm sure all of the information is there, but it's organized so poorly that it barely helps. I'm no stranger to dense manuals and complex games, but if there is ever a second version of this game, I highly recommend seeking a better technical writer than the author of the current manuals).

/ off soapbox

// still love AGEOD, just can't help but see this game as a misfire. It's the GOLD VERSION, for heaven's sake! This is the one that should work!

I read that you have tried many things to run it. Does that include turning the UAC off?

Not only the game never crashes for me, I can very-easily alt-tab out of it all the time, so there must be something colliding with it in your system. Most probably the UAC thing, if you use Vista or 7.

There's some support for davek here: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?p=178271

Like Tamas did, I wrote two suggestions.

Thanks. I'll work that particular save game in the other thread. But for Tamas-- nope, Win 7, no UAC, logged on as administrator.

:confused :D avek,

It has to be Sysyem problems and or OS? There are four of us all in our 50's who play with 4 different systems, and 3 different OS's. The orignal DID test the last nerve of our patience at times, though managed to work it out.

Gold has had some small glitches, but quickly worked out. Logically it has to be someting in you system/os (just guessing) as it really is superior in smothness and ease to the original production!

My gold version works perfectly fine as well, even with Windows 7.

Maybe you should do a full reinstall, and making sure the registry keys are cleaned out before reinstalling.

Mine crashes once every year.

Which is frustrating for a gold version. But far more frustrating is the slow speed of the game. It takes me about 6 hours to play 1 year of the game which is pretty long, alot of time I am just trying to pick up units and stuff and waiting for units to move.

Windows 7 user here and it works fine for me. I have had one crash to desktop in about 8 hours of play. Thats fine for me.

Ive had one gripe and thats not a bug really.

If your having that many problems it must be your system. You said its new? Graphics card not overheating is it? It can't be bugs as we would all be suffering aswell.

I'd try a fresh install.
