Problem with modified LocalStrings file

Tue Dec 29, 2009 7:50 pm

Hi,
I've modified the content of file LocalStrings_ACV.csv file using a CSV editor, in order to slightly change the text of an event.

Actually, the new string appear correctly in the game but, regardless of the fact that I play the April 1861 campaign, the initial date appears to be "July 1861" (no "Early" or "Late") and the following turns are August, September, etc., without 2 turns per month.
At this point, even if I replace the modified file with the original one, the dates remain this way, until I completely reinstall the game.

Has someone already experience this and could please give me an advice on how to overcome this problem?

Thanks in advance,
vanguard

Gray,
many thanks for your answer.
The ACV vs ACW was in fact a typo.
I modified that file (and only that one) by using a CSV editor, adding a few words to an existing event text, before launching the game and starting a new campaign, .
The modified text, and all other messages and events, are shown correctly during the game, the only issue being the date, which remains "corrupted" even after I restore the original file. I did not leave two _ACW.csv files in that directory.
In any case, it seems that the game duration in turns remains the same and that only the date shown is incorrect.
I've tried time and again, also using different CSV editors, to overcome that issue, but so far to no avail...

If it was only an editing problem, when I switch back to the original LocalStrings_ACW.csv file (of which I had stored a copy), then the date issue should disappear.
Instead, it remains every time I relaunch AACW, until I reinstall the game.

I also tried to find if there is some other AACW system file in some other directory which could have been unintentionally permanently modified as a consequence of the previous usage on the modified LocalStrings_ACW.csv, but I was not able to find any.

Hi Vanguard.
What was the text file you were trying to change in the Local strings file and what program were you using to convert to csv?
Lets start from there.

Hi Gray and bigus,
I've just rebooted the PC, but the date issue when I start the game remains the same.
I'm using the latest patch 1.15 and trying to play the April 1861 campaing w-Ky (I tried also the one without KY, but the issue is the same).

I see also in the log files that, while the scenario name is correct, the date shown is "July 1861".

I'm attaching a zip containing the modified CSV file, the log files in the "Logs" directory and the scenario file saved in the "Saves" directory.

In the CSV file concerned, I've modified only the "evt_txt_CSA_TN_secedes1861" and "evt_txt_USA_TN_secedes1861" English strings, adding the sentence "Eastern Tennessee unionists revolt.", as a first experimental step towards a MOD including rioters in Eastern Tennessee following the secession.

I used the freeware software "CSVed 1.4.9", but I have also previously tried other programs with the same results.

Hi Gray,
thanks for your help.

I've downloaded the DB zip file and modified the LocalStrings_ACW35a.xls file contained in it using Excel and saved it in CSV format, but the result has been exactly the same as before. Same date issue.
I'm attaching the CSV file concerned.

When you replace the original LocalStrings file with my previous file, don't you experience the same date issue?

I've been finally able to obtain the desired result without the date issue.

I have edited the original LocalStrings_ACW.csv file by using an hexadecimal editor... I think I will have to use it to modify that file, even if it makes the job more complicated.

I did not understand ayway what the other editors or Excel insert in the file that make the game permanently change the way the dates are shown, even after restoring the original file, regardless of the scenarios.

Thanks again Gray for your help.

I've finally found out that the root cause of the date issue is the replacement of the original file.

In fact, if I edit the original file (i.e. the one originally installed by the setup.exe), everything works fine.
If I replace it with another file with the same name, even one absolutely identical to the original (obtained with copy and paste in the same directory), the previously described date issue appears and remains until I run again the setup program and reinstall the game.

Maybe that in some way the game program links the LocalStrings_ACW.csv file descriptor at installation. Weird...

BTW, I'm using Windows XP SP2 on a Pentium 4 3GHz machine with 1.256 Gb RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64Mb Video card.
