How to rename units

Wed Aug 05, 2009 2:26 pm

Is there a way to rename units? In v1.14 somtimes, but not always, a box box pops up and asks if I want to rename the unit after clicking on the unit tab. This apparently is a one time deal.

I've just started playing this game, so pardon the newbi-ness if there's an obvious way to do this (it ain't in the manual, though).

Ctrl-Left Click on the tab in question and it will bring up the box to rename them.

(I find sometimes when I come back from alt-tabbing out of the game that when I click on a stack the renaming box pops up. That may be why you have seen it before and been confused.)

Welcome to the forums! :)
It works as soloswolf explains but bear in mind it serves to remain stacks, not units.
Also, Army stacks cannot be renamed. But you can rename all the rest (normal stacks, and corp stacks)
The renaming function is not in the manual as it was added recently in patch.
There has been a lot of new features added on patches. You can see them on the long readme you can find on the game installation folder or in this neat guide (updated only up to 1.13)

This is incorrect. Indeed, army stacks can be renamed. Separate the Army HQ and name this stack what you want : "Army of Whatever"

Drop in your *** leader...and create the army. If you hover your mouse over the stack it will say "Army of Whatever". Also any corps that you attach will say they belong to "Army of Whatever"!

However, if you look the combined HQ\leader unit it will say that it is one of the predefined armies...but only here it says this!

Uh oh...when I CTRL+left click on a tab, or any icon on the map (stack), the name box does not appear, but the focus cycles through each "tab" in the region.

Am I mis-reading something?

Hi
In my keyboard (spanish keyboard) some shortcut keys are a little deferent.
Are you using a English language keyboard or maybe some other??
Try ALT or ALT GR keys plus left click to see i it works. :)

By the way, it only works on Tabs. Not on the map stacks.
Cheers

Tally Ho!

ALT+Left Click does the trick. I'm using an English keyboard. At the risk of sounding like an arrogant American, I never thought there would be a difference in key functions.

:D
The keyboards are arranged (slightly) different according the different languages and sometimes strange things happen...

On the Spanish keyboard we need to make room for our cool ;) "Ñ" letter that we use in a lot of words like España (Spain), Niño/niña (boy/girl) and some very widely used "bad word"...
French and German also have some unique letters around...

Curiously, until 1.14 patch i had to use ALT to rename and the English users used CTRL. Now its the opposite... CTRL works Ok for me and it seems ALT works now for you  :bonk: :D

What a mess! :D
Your are right, Gray. I wrote it backwards! :bonk:
For the spanish it was CTRL before 1.14 and now is ALT, like for everybody else!

Wonder what it is in German ... I tried to do this for several turns but I believe neither ALT nor CTRL worked. It does work in BoA for me, so I thought maybe AACW doesn't have that feature.

Yeah, I've been down that road too ... when I lived in Switzerland, I used a logical German keyboard on a physical Swiss one, so I could continue touch-typing. But whenever I needed to actually find a letter by sight, I was lost! :bonk:

Alt and Ctrl keys should be the same whatever is your keyboard language.

Now be aware that "alt" key (left of the space bar) is not the same as the "Alt gr" key (right of the space bar).

With my german keyboard it is so that whenever I go back by win task manager to desktop, minimise the game to look up something else and go then back to game I have this annoying rename box, so that I can not play normal again.
What forces me to finish the game, do something else, start it again.
Of course I know I am just ignorant.
One other thing. If I install the game it askes me in with language the installation should happen. Even if I choose English, the game will than work in German. Is it possible to install the whole (any whole) game in English?
Sometimes some demos are in english but compleet games are all in German, so I`d like to play them in English.
I know, that must be a stupid Question, but what can I do?

Hi!!
Why don't you just close the rename box and continue playing?? Can't you

All AGEOD games are multilingual.
To change lenguage you only have to click on the appropriate option on the options menu.
Not sure about the language selection for the German edition, but usually you can choose between English/French/Third language (spanish, german, Italian...)
You will have to restarts the game for the language change to have effect.

Yes I can, but when I go to the next stack it will ask me again to rename,
so I tell him I am fine with the name, I just want to go along with the game-
no chance- rename or quit. Would be anyway better, if I buy an second screne to avoid all this hustle.
The next question, I found at least for Ageod games now the button I have to push for gaming in English, though there is no option to play in French, Spanish or whatever. Anyway I am fine with English version.
Thanks

Ouch! :bonk:
That's a real pain in the ass! :(
Have you tried to go to the game main menu screen before ATL+TAB to desktop?? Maybe this way the renaming thing don't goes nuts...
Or use the Start key instead of ALT+TAB to go to desktop??
Another possibility... go the AGE settings program and select windowed mode for the game, I think in this way you will not need to use ALT+TAB...

Cheers!

aaargh,

now I have my game running in English and all the save games dont work anymore, I know I have to rename them somehow, but what exactly it is I dont know anymore.
Looks like starting one more time again, since I still made some mistakes - that will never stopp - not too bad. I am used to it by now.

Close the rename box and just push once the alt key (without any click with the mouse), it should solve this problem.

That's strange!
I continuously change form English to Spanish in my games and have no compatibility problem with the saves
You can even play a PBEM with your rival using another language without problems :bonk:
Do other German players have these issues??

It was not the language, but the version.
I had German 1,14, overplayed (prob not the right word) it with English.
But it was Vanilla wenn I tried to play my old savegames.
- That did not work - After downloading the patch again it worked,
for sure Arsan is compleetly right.
Other games have a big impact on savefiles, if one changes the installation to an other language, so.

You can always subtitle the german part, so we all can take a peek :D
(confess it, its was about something "dirty", wasn't it  ;) )

By the way, the official AGEOD german forums are "outsourced" here
