Books on the War in the West

Sat May 16, 2009 11:37 pm

I was wondering what are good books about the Civil War in the West? I feel I know about the war in the east pretty well, but I know very little about the war in the west. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ncumna,

I've got tons of suggestions for you! First, look up the books by Peter Cozzens on Coprinth & Iuka, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. Cozzens is one of the very best Civil War authors writing today. He also recently did a book on Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

I personally enjoy Ed Bearss' three volume study of the Vicksburg Campaign as well, though this one is I believe over $100 to purchase.

Albert Castel's Decision in the West covers the Atlanta Campaign in one volume.

Noah Andre Trudeau's recent book Southern Storm: Sherman's March to the Sea is also an excellent if a little overlong title.

If you need even more consider checking out my Civil War books page and clicking on the Western Theater link.

That Body of Brave Men by Mark W. Johnson a history of the regulars in the west is a decent book.

Comte,

I read that one a few years ago, even before I had a blog! Here's a link if you're interested in what I thought:
