Sumter: Odd Union AI Move

Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:02 pm

[1.13b]

Early May 1861. In the attached turn a number of AI Union officers seem to be trying to bypass Forts Sumter and Johnson and get shot at. Very rum.

I don't know how to "change sides" in an AI game so I can't see what the attempted Union move is.

Also I thought sea or coastal movement was not possible without transports: these officers don't have any.

Usual apologies if this has been reported before.

[Edit: save game removed - probably has a password from a PBEM game I'm playing, also will attach some save games below]

Got it - the button top right on the Load Game screen to see what the AI is doing.

The 8 Union officers are in Charleston not where they should be in Washington (Misplaced.jpg).

I tried a replay with slightly different results (CapeFear.jpg).
Late April, 8 officers are on home territory.
Early May, they are at sea (no transports) at Cape Fear moving to NY and the 7th Fleet, with their river and rail travel tabs set.
Late May, they are shot up by Fort Morgan.

I have given the AI six teleports a turn, but in this case there are 8 officers at sea. Banks is also at sea in another area, for a total of 9.

I can't set an officer to the same river/rail movement and teleport him to a coastal water area - maybe this is some weird teleport side-effect but maybe something else.

In any case the AI has lost the Union high command. In an earlier AI game the Union attacked in the summer with a giant stack (160,000 men at +35% command penalty), maybe because the Union no longer had any Corps leaders.

[Edit - set the teleport level to the minimum 0/3 and played the first few turns of the campaign again. The same thing is happening in Early May only fewer officers are at sea or in Charleston on that turn, on three goes 2, 3 and 5. I also noticed that these officers never appear on the CS map though they are not covered by FoW.]

Chertio:

Have also seen this odd phenomenon. Have seen some CSA generals come down from Canada also. Tried to find some pre-war [Edit: excuse me, "antebellum"] command info on the group pictured.

Source: http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Robert_H._Milroy
Site has bio info on CSA and Union generals.

Milroy:
Just before Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated, Milroy recruited a company for the 9th Indiana Militia with men living around Rensselaer [Indiana] and was appointed its captain soon after Fort Sumter, but on April 27, 1861, he was appointed to the Federal service as colonel of the 9th Indiana Infantry. He took part in the western Virginia campaign and was promoted to brigadier general on September 3, 1861.

Indiana ==> Washington = not via Atlantic Ocean. :bonk:

Wood: Wood traveled in Europe from 1859 until early 1861 on a leave of absence from the army. So it actually makes sense for Wood to arrive by sea, but probably not by way of Charleston. ;)

He don't care a damn for what the enemy does out of his sight, but it scares me like hell."

Hi Chertio!

I commented your problem to Gray here
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showpost.php?p=137495&postcount=182
He and Pocus will need your save game with some backup turns to trace where the problem starts.
Thanks for the report! :)

Just to freak me out, I tried the first few turns of this campaign again and nothing untoward happened... all the US officers arrived safely in NY (why NY :coeurs: ?:bonk :) .

But attached are the first four turns of yet another CS v AI game where several US officers get sunk by Fort Morgan (it is usually Fort Sumter because they have started from Charleston, now that doesn't seem to be happening so often :wacko :) and Banks cops it after the last turn attached.

Anyhow, in the many replays of this opening (the full Civil War game) I have done, it seems that all is good at the end of the Late April turn... in the Early May turn a variable number of US officers get put into impossible positions.

Gheez, I have seen that and I guess I gave the AI too much credit, I thought the AI was suiciding poor generals against my coastal forts.

I can confirm this too I believe. I haven't done any digging on specifics, but they do it regularly since the last 2 patches (give or take). Run the forts around Sumpter and then pretty much disappear as far as I can tell... goofy.

I usually see this right after installation on vanilla and always thought it was a no reboot issue.

Your report suggests they do arrive in DC and are then sent on a boat trip down the coast.Did all the generals who arrive that turn do this or did some get kept back?

Maybe they could be locked for a turn on arrival to check they do arrive where they should (DC or Maryland or Philedelphia) and to see if Athena still sends them on long range scouting missions.

Sorry to be a bit slow on the uptake GL - do you mean 1 zip with the latest turn in the campaign folder and the previous turns in their backup folders (and with the rpl files removed)?

Early April - officers not on map.
Late April - seven officers from both '61 pools in Charleston.
Early May - at Cape Fear (the Sumter guns were destroyed).

In many replays I don't see a pattern - in this case they haven't been placed in Washington, in other replays I am sure I have seen them on home ground Late April and at sea Early May - I will try to reproduce this before stating it for certain.

Also the officers involved vary - sometimes Banks is one of them (usually further up the coast northwards), in this case not.

Settings attached. No quickfixes installed, this is just the straight 1.13b patch.

I bought the game (internet version if different from box) 22 Feb 09, so I don't think I will have applied any of the previous patches (1.13b being 21 Jan I believe).
