Noobie question about Stance...

Thu Jan 22, 2009 11:25 pm

Ok.. let me see if I'm getting things right..

if a stack doesn't move.. it entrenches....

if you put it's stance on Orange (if it attacks, it will lose the Entrenchment benefit)?

if I put it on Defend, it will do well in the entrenchment.. but could an NME stack move right through the area if it doesn't attack?

I guess what I'm saying.. is can I form defensive lines and leave them on 'blue' hoping they'll stop the NME from bypassing to get behind (is it the amount of units in a stack that determines to stop them? Or do I need to have a stack on Orange if I want to prevent the enemy stack from sneaking through)

sorry if these are stupid questions

thanks for all the information I am pulling so far from this forum!!!.. learning more every day!!

If significantly smaller force (say cav raiders) comes through in "passive" stance...then yes there is a chance they will sneak by.

But with most larger formations...it's pretty unlikely that they'll be able to make it through the region without coming into contact with your forces.

At least that's what I've experienced thus far. Besides...say for example:

You have your army massed and entrenched in Defensive posture at Manassas...and the enemy moves his army into the area in "passive" posture to avoid combat. The NEXT turn...your enemy has the choice of either being attacked while he's in passive mode...attacking you in your trenches...or fight a battle in which both you and he are attacking.

So no...there's really no way for any large force to "sneak through".

If someone ever manages to make it into the same region as one of my armies without combat. I'll know they're in passive mode....and I'll attack them. Advantage to me because passive mode has some pretty severe disadvantages.

I kind of had the same question. I was under the impression that 2 forces set to defensive stance would never engage each other. I was also unclear as to whether setting a stationary force to attack stance (but not moving) would cause it to lose its entrenchment. Does a unit also have to be set to attack stance to exert military control over a region?

Feel free to yell at me (my manual is sitting under some pile of boxes) but how can I tell my current entrenchment level? I never see it anywhere on the army descriptions.

Do note that an enemy force in passive posture moving into a region where its side has 5% or less military control, will automatically be switched to offensive posture.

So, if you have full military control of a region and have your stack(s) there set to defensive posture, the enemy will still try to engage them when they enter.

Setting a stack to offensive posture will not remove the entrenchments, but the stack will not benefit from them in combat.

That makes sense.

Does posture matter for commerce raiders in the shipping box (or telling them to "evade" for that matter)?

AFAIK, posture does not matter regarding battles in the shipping box. Evade order may help your raiders sneak by en route to the shipping box.

Thanks.. I will set all my entrenched defending stacks to blue, and hopefully see better results in my upcoming battles when attacked!!!

one last question.. if I entrench next to an NME city... do I switch to Orange (which I always thought you had to do, to initiate the attack)? Or willl blue still 'besiege' them to a point, where they will loose supply and weaken? It seems to me that some stacks that have turned Blue due to brown envelopes, I still get besieging action reports from those stacks (as if they are still doing something).. mind you I'm just playing the AI at this points :)

You'll still besiege if you are in passive posture, but you'll be a lot less likely to engage any enemy forces coming or going. :)
