Newbie with Questions......

Thu Oct 23, 2008 5:24 pm

AARRRGHHHH I hear you all cry! :bonk:

Hey guys, a complete newbie to both AACW and war/strategy games so PLEASE be gentle with me.

I have a question about the difference between units in the game. For example, what's the difference between Line Infantry and Light infantry. What are the pro's & cons of Skirmishers & Raiders and what part do they best play?

No doubt i'll have LOTS more to come but this should do be for now. lol

Cheers guys

Matt

AARRRGHHHH!! :p leure: :D

Welcome aboard!

To see the difference between any kind of unit, click over their NATO icons to open the unit detail window. There you will have all the statistics for the selected type of element (the building blocks of a unit).

Line and light infantry ara pretty similar. On real ACW the distinction was mostly in the name. Both are intended to figh in the line of battle, on divisions and corps.
Skirmishers: if you mean sharpshooters, they are very useful because of their special ability that improves the initiate of all the units on a division.
Put one on each division if you can.

Raiders, partisans and the like are different thing. Don't send them to battle as they are very weak. They are fast and sneaky and best used with the evade combat button pressed. Use them to infiltrate behind enemy lines, scout, destroy railroads, burn supplies and cause havoc.
Just be prepared to lose them pretty soon if they get caught up or run out of supply while on enemy territory. They are kind of "disposable"

Regards

PS: Use the forum search feature. it works great and you will find tons of info about neartly any doubt you might have.

Gunboat river picket?

Mon Dec 15, 2008 8:34 pm

Ooh good, a newbie questions thread!

Regarding using gunboats to block the passage of land forces across a river - I had read some advice some time ago about forming a GB picket line from Cairo to Nashville to guard against incursions along that sector; but then read somewhere else that you need groups of 4 GBs to prevent a river crossing, and I don't have enough to that. Have the rules changed or is this advice still valid?

TIA.

Steve.

Also note the difference between units and elements; 4 elements are needed to achieve a 90% block; each gunboat unit has 2 elements, so you'll need no more than 2 gunboat units to do this. :)

I take it that the limit of 4 elements to maximise the effectiveness of blocking a river to land forces crossing over is different to the number of elements required to blockade the river to opponents supply transport (along the river) and enemy forts / harbours? i.e. as noted within the tool tip for each river section?
Just when you think things are going well .......... :(

To block supply, only one (unopposed) element is needed (AFAIK)
