WW1 Interface (and some other) improvements suggestions [

Thu Nov 13, 2008 9:12 pm

Hello
Now, after long hours struggling to understand what happened, I'm finally able to play (barely) the Campaign ... and the more I play the more I like it, but also consider some interface improvements are really needed !
I think that the main "big" problem is that the game is very structured ... and the interface is much more free-form, EU-like, this leads to endless frustrations where you don't know what you should/could do, what you may have forgotten etc...
For this I have no ready global solution, but let's be more precise with some suggestions :
0- The software mouse cursor is not precise enough, maybe too big, oftentimes I have to click twice or thrice to hit a small button correctly. Change it or allow hardware standard cursor
0.5 - Please align the unit interface and the log window, currently there's a line half-hidden, it's ugly.
1- When the "IA processing" and "game busy" messages boxes are visible, it would be nice to have something "moving" telling more in detail what the AI/game is doing, just to be sure it's not frozen (and so that I could understand why deciding to move 2 poor Turkish armies take so long !)
2- Even knowing what country you play currently is tricky ; the selected country (with its flag shown) is just the last owner of a region you clicked in (if it's not a plyer country you can't do anything, but still)! . First time I played a campaign I first searched for French troops, there weren't any as they are deployed after the War plan phase (where I was in), but I clicked on some Belgian units in the meantime ... and I had no War plan to choose anymore !
Quite weird convention, the country should be chosen by a "direct" method- eg click in the flag and it display a list of countries (flags), you choose one (highlighted are player countries)...
3- Combat screens... many things to do :
First the Breakthrough subscreen/window is a nightmare : it is "clickable" in the 1st round but you can't do anything in it, then you're not notified you won a round and should use it (so you forget..), and when the combat ends it's not clickable anymore !! Please disable it whan it's not usable, notify a round won (suggest to plan a BT by a msg) or better, open it automatically !
We need a combat round report (especially in large and naval battles), and a summary of losses on each side for the current battle would be useful
End of combat report should be more informative, and show the units that were damaged/lost (for example show the unit counters on the right or left of the current counts). In case of sieges, the end of combat report is lacking.
Also, the "crossed swords"icons for winner and loser are too much similar - maybe add a "laurel crown" to the winner icon, or give a broken sword to the loser, whatever..
4- Graphics (in the "ledger") are mostly unreadable - lines too thin, some colors too light (white on white background is super !). Plus a view of enemy countries data will be interesting (maybe as an option), lese you can't really compare
5- End of scenario screen is depressing - please allow to get back to the victory conditions fulfilled or not, points gained by enemy and friendly losses. Instant access to "ledger" with all tallies and graphs (enemy included) would be another good option.

Apart from that, the AI really needs to be quickened/optimized, I have to wait 5 min for the "strategic AI" in a small scenario like Palestine, and 10-20 sec just to have the AI choose which Serbian corps should be put to the front in battle (amongst 3 total !!) ... My configuration meets (nearly exactly) the "recommended" config of the manual, such waits are way too long and frankly ununderstandable.

I'm pretty confident that the team will seriously improve the game, I'd be glad if this helps !

Percées

Le bouton "Percée" ou "Contre-attaque" pourrait-il simplement apparaître à la fin du combat lorsqu'elles sont possibles (ou même sous forme d'une boîte de dialogue) ?

Interface suggestions

Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:47 pm

1. Because the game is quite complex I would appriciate any in-game help, highlighting what is left to be done to end a phase.

2. Grand Campaign for 2 player: It is structured for 2 alliances not x nations. Therefore, it would be nice if all the nation menus (production, diplomacy) could be merged: 1 alliances, 1 production menu. This would be esp. handy for the Entente player.

3. Plus, its would be nice to have an overview screen at the upper menu bar: It could list all the chosen war plans and cards for all active nations. It would be accessible all the time. Maybe enhace the nation flag screen? Oh, and I apologise if this one is in game and I haven't found it yet...

4. A standard mouse arrow would be nice. For novice players with minor rules knowlegde, struggeling with the rather clumsy in-game mouse arrows, this could help to prevent irritations. Esp. when we try to move units up front in the battle screens, which just now aren't movable...

5. Pre 1.0.4 Version, I remember that movement orders into enemy controlled hex resulted in merge units option. Not sure, what about V 1.0.4.

6. This is quite a text based game, which I welcome. It would be nice, if text infos could be made more readable, by condensing, streamlining the text. I remember an option card with very small fonts.

Yes, most things you said are really true! :sherlock:

Most important things I think is to improve the mouse and the graphics cause they are sometimes frustrating. The shrilly coulors, the dark map and the unreadable ledger  can not motivate as they should do. It takes so long to know what to do first, second, third and have I missed anything. The general overview could be better.

Btw is there any good reason why the map is turned to the left. I have to look twice if I want to identify the European continent.

Another voice for a better mouse pointer. The detaching and remerging of corps is a major pain.

Using plain NATO counter style helps *immensely*
I forgot to mention miniscule text in some buttons/menus (really miniscule, like 2 pixels per letter :bonk: !).
I still hope we can have an hardware cursor... Calvinus ?

General obeservations about the interface
1. Event cards: While these card like representations are pretty citations of the board game, they are hardly managable, the more they get. Only the first 6 (?!) cards are visible and in fact usable. You’ll lose the grand picture of wild card options. You’ll stuck with maybe actually useless cards. Why not use the space leftover at the upper bar for a event card symbol/screen, like the political option screen? BTW: Just when am I supposed the “Greek temple” cards? They always seem to be locked.

2. Which are the enemy nations?: Esp. later in the grand campaign it’s getting harder to know your enemies. Why not change the “neutral/ at war” info you already get when clicking on a national province and then place the mouse over the diplomacy icon at the upper bar? Just make it “neutral/Entente/ Central Power or CP”.

3. Just clicking on the ammunition icon at the upper bar to have a look on ammunition planning and then leaving the ammunition screen makes without changing anything makes the ammo production go zero. (I know it has been mentioned a few times here)

4. It would be nice, if on the save screen the game could also be saved not only by clicking ok but alternatively saved by hitting the enter button. As far I can see the latter action pretends to save but does not save a game.

Desperately Needed Fixes in next patch:

1. Creating detachments is downright impossible in some terrain locations because one has to have the mouse pointer in *just* the right spot. A real pain. Why not have a button to do this instead (like the button for reserves)? :cuit:

2. There needs to be a diplomatic summary somewhere showing all nation's current diplomacy level. Right now one has to click around the screen on each nation and keep a written list.

3. The red text of the combat results is never in the same place, and is often on top of other text in the box, making it unreadable. This is especially true on the siege screen. Move the result text to a specific space, like how "retreat" always comes up in the same place. :crying:

Still a great game! Just needs a little additional polish.

You're right... can you give me an example of such locations? ;)

Battle animations uder work... :cuit:

> Hasslet, in Belgium is an area where the position of GE 1st Army's counter (I use the square NATO markers) is such that it is very difficult to position the mouse to create a detachment. There are others. I have gotten better at it over time, but that's after A LOT of practice, so the suggestion on the button is just an idea for improving the detachment function.

Overall, the game is great, so these were just suggestions for improvement. Keep up the good work!

I think highlight colors of some nations (like Austria Hungary or other Balkan nations) in strategy and political modes are somewhat transparent.. In my opinion, it's hard to find what strategy cities are. It's need to make highlight color stronger, I think.

Why not make it possible to click from one domain/upper bar to another with out having to click on the check mark. I realize there are more important matters to be taken care of, but maybe down the road this could be implemented.

When I get the message about subs torpedoing U.S. ships, there is only one answer to give. What I want to know is why bother making me click the answer when their is only one? Why not just show the message?
thanks

It works likewise because of the event format and because we leave some rooom for offering various answering options later (e.g. to allow the Entente player graduated response options) ;)
