big battles

Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:09 pm

Could it be made possible in a future patch to shift forces from left to right commitment boxes in a battle (until you press the engage button for the first time, of course)?

Its not pleasant to lose a big battle just because one didnt see it was a big battle, and has deployed all of ones troops to the left side (and loading a previous save produces different results, so cant really be used as a remedy).

I do understand it is not necessary to put any troops in a commited box in a small battle, but it is an intuitive thing to do and hard to give up on (at least for me...)

Cheers,

Filip

Boardgame rules prevent this! It's a major design point... :(
Redeployment from one flank to the other is possible only for one corps per round, starting from the 2nd round I guess...

But i imagine while playing a boardgame, we are well aware if the battle is small one or big one and can deploy accordingly.

On the other hand, in the combat resolution window of a computer version, it is easy to overlook that same fact and deploy entire force on only one flank and then realize (when its too late) that we left the right flank completely open.

i was wondering, would a big red flashing sign saying: "BIG BATTLE" on the outset of a big battle be a rules breach?
If not, such a modification would be enough to keep us from accidentaly ruining our whole battle plan in a crucial battle (as I, of course, did prior to starting this thread, at the gates of Paris... :bonk :) .

You can't actually overlook it, since you can't hit "engage" if you have no comitted force on one of the sides at start. :P

Lifting this restriction would ruin this important mechanic.

In addition we can't introduce a 100% free redeployment within the two flanks, because this would bring devastating effects on the game balance. This is a very strong point of boardgame rules.

By the time you hit engage and see its not working, you have already misdeployed...

but i guess the solution is not commiting anything but one corps, and deploying the rest freely in a small battle from the rear sector, or deploying correctly after the engage button warns you that youre in the big battle...

Its just that one plays so many small battles that he learns to concentrate on only the left portion of battle resolution screen, so when the big battle finally comes, one tends to overlook it, which i believe cant happen in a live boardgame.

It's strange you miss the right flank. Don't you see AI deploying units there?

Well, as the interface is made for both flanks, but so many battles are small ones (at least before the grand offensives start) i kind of get used to just focusing in the left.

One more question... does putting units in commited box have any effect on duration of the battle? I mainly deploy them (instead of leaving them in the rear) for fear that the battle might end too soon (when i have many active corps left)

Well, it also happens to me sometimes to just look left and be surprised to see I can't engage, then realize there's a right side battle !

What would be more painless I think is to add some "reset" button to undo the setup and start again.
Currently you cannot sometimes put some units back to their starting position (or forgot them :blink :) . As this feature will be on a given round and won't carry over rounds it's just an "interface" issue.

I just read the boardgame rules and they say:

"Each player may question his opponent
to verify if it will be a Major Battle by
asking him if he has at least 4 corps in line
(other than the reserve). If so the combat is
resolved as a Major battle."

Dont know what happens if you forget to ask... does he get an advantage in positioning, or do you play a small battle instead.

How about an alert to the player when it is a major battle, to remind him to deploy units on both flanks.
