movement path changed?

Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:13 am

In my current PBEM game, I had troops bypassing Jefferson, MO via riverine transport, landing in the region to the west, and then attacking (to avoid river landing penalties). Instead, the troops landed directly at Jefferson (which is obvious from the day they arrived in this region- had they peformed the movement as plotted it would have been later in the turn) and were, suprisingly, slaughtered. Why?

Can you uncheck the AI box at any time, or do you have to do it before you start the PBEM game?

No need for that from the Host player, but it won't do harm either. Here is the logic:

a) if a turn exists (ORD file), the AI don't play.
b) if turn 1 and no turn exists, the AI plays and flags the file (AI file)
c) if turn 2+ and no turn exists, two things can happen:
- the file is flagged AI file: the AI plays.
- the file is not flagged AI file: before hosting, whoever hosts get a pop-up window saying that the turn was a 'Human' turn and that the AI will take over the position.

So if the host pays attention, there is absolutely no need to uncheck the box.

So is there any way to explain what happened here, Pocus? I really think the ai took over for me with those particular commanders.

As you are in PBEM, this is the host mistake. 95% sure.

Well, I guess what I'm asking is: are there ever any situations where the ai is designed to take over besides just issuing conflicting orders?

Not seems to be the case reported by the thread started, but the Ai can auto cancel an attack on a region ordered by you an retire to an adjacent region before a battle if the enemy is clearly too strong to even try.

Happens frequently when the enemy heavily reinforces a position while your stack is on the way, making the attack you ordered a suicide.

For example, suppose you as the USA orders a couple of brigades located at Washington to secure Harpers ferry which is held just my a weak CSA militia unit.
While your troops are on the way to H-F, Jackson and a strong CSA corps arrives on H-F. Your Ai brigade commander will look at how the situation has developed and as soon as he arrives at H-F, try to retreat before the battle, to the other side of the Potomac on Passive posture, overriding your attack orders.
Usually, this kind of Ai takeovers are for the best.
