Saving Games

Thu Sep 07, 2006 12:36 am

I don't suppose this is really a "technical" issue but more of a gripe--so far as I can determine, the game does not allow holding onto old saved game files, meaning that the game has no "Awww shucks!" fudge factor if you pull a really bone-headed move ("I didn't want Washington to assault, I wanted him to besiege!!!"), and wind up getting the Continental Army wiped out after 5 hours of gameplay. If this happens, I can't back up to a saved file a while back and start back up again, I have to start a new game all the way back at turn one, and begin the whole gory business over again...

Am I missing something in the save game mechanics, or is this as designed? If "as designed", well...it would be nice if it were "redesigned"... :P How do I go about "archiving" old saved game files for revisiting if I really stuff things up? I really loathe getting all the way to June 1776, getting the Continental Army slaughtered along with the best generals of the war, and instead of being able to go back one turn, have to go allllll the way back to Bunker Hill again.... :(

Enquiring minds want to know! I have run into the same "problem." I'd really like to archive the old saved games, so as to try out different strategies for the British to take Louisbourg!

You can back up at least a few turns, when at the load game screen, where it lists the save game, highlight the current turn, and in the tooltip it will tell you to hit a key ('Home' key if I remember correctly) to restore the previous turn's save. This will change the save game listed to the previous month of the same game, this can be done repeatedly (I've backed up 2-3 months this way, I don't know how far back you can go). When the desired month is listed, then click on the savegame and there you are!

There is a 'Save As' option that allows you to rename saves, but I've never had it work correctly, it seems to rename the entire series of saves, but still only the most current month shows on the savegame list.

It would be convenient if the 'Save As' option let you save a truly independent save game, that you could return to at a later time and replay from that point.

When you pass the mouse over a game, a tooltip should show, do you have it?
As Justus II says, there is 3 options, one allows you to back up one month. 12 turns are saved this way, it should be enough :)

Save as create a game with a new name, the backups are still with the previous name, if I recall well (seldomly used now that there is the possibility to rename a game at any time and with the backups).

Restoring Old Games

Okay I feel like a moron now. Yep, hit 'Home' and the save files will be pushed back a turn at a time. Helps to read the tooltips, eh? :bonk:
