Been awhile...new map?

Tue Feb 22, 2011 9:37 pm

Been awhile since i posted here. Is there a new map for ACW? i strongly
dislike the original as i makes me feel i am sitting off to the side of a table
looking at it from a distance and the graphics are not what a mapmaker of
the time would produce. Love the game otherwise!

AFAIK, that is the only map.

I have no idea what this means.

(BTW, have you tried zooming, and the different filters?)

Neither do I so I decided to just say the dumbest thing I could think of spur of the moment.

plasticpanzers,

I'm not trying to be difficult. I really don't understand your interpretation.

It's awesome that you love the game! This is the place to go to find out more about how to enjoy it. Your map comment did surprise me, as it is a point many people make when discussing the things they like about the game.

dolphin,

FWIW, comments like that don't help anyone. In the future, please do not use my comments as the seed of your statements. Thanks.

soloswolf made a reasonable and polite request for you to NOT use his statements for a seed to use to respond to others and you chose to be rude. Learn some manners.

I think there is a world of difference between rude trolling and light humour.

Frankly your needless response to a harmless exchange that was done and over is what is rude.'

That is unless of course you meant it as a joke which is exactly what I think about your logic in calling what I said as being rude.

If a person does not want their PUBLIC Posts used as seeds in a thread then they should make them private, or not make them at all.

Even if your complaint was legitamate I have only ever resonded to his posts once to respond to someone elses post before he made his request.

If you notice my second post was directed specifically to him, so your criticism is erronious as is your suggestion that I was being rude.

I guess the posting traffic arround here is so hot and heavy we definately need an overzelous control freak to police all the potential flame wars before they get out of hand.

If that is your job arround here it must be very boring.

P.S. Now what I just posted to you is what I would call RUDE.

Can you tell the difference?

I thought i was rather clear. I have not been on the forums
for quite some time. If i remember (and i may be mistaken)
there was some talk about the map (being on an angle) and
its design (somewhat elementary). I was checking to see
if in any newer versions map options were available. No need
for rudeness. I know some players are protective of the game
and think its their property but we all own one so it does make
us kinda equal. Myself I would have prefered a newer map
based on cartography of the time. The current map is some-
what (and i am being lightly critical here) like a 5th grader's
map of the ACW. If you don't like my post tough cheese! :D
edit: Mucho kudos to the designers as this is the most historic
version of an ACW game made....

I am reporting you to the forum administrator for being rude.

I have played many games. Some with better maps and others with far worse.

From what I understand though they have improved on the map by fixing certain glitches that were messing up supply conduits and interfering with proper application of Naval Bombardments from land forts. Those sorts of things.

Hey! It wouldn't have been...a cartographer, would it?

pp, I think you are confusing this with a different game. The map is rather aesthetically superior to period maps (especially if you see in color), and conveys a lot more information (the purpose of a map). I do not understand what you mean when you say it is at an angle; the map is very clearly top-down. Some of the features (towns, mountains, woods) are drawn "at an angle" (I think that's what you mean), but only to make the terrain more apparent at a glance.

I think I'd rather stick with a representation of the world as it was, not as the cartographers of the time thought it was. Joe Hooker relied on period maps, and you see where it got him.

So true. I also don't get what he means by "at an angle". It's a top down map?

It got him on the flank and rear of Lee's army. It's not the map's fault he didn't know what to do next.

Actually, I rather like the map. The "Stratego"-like icons put me off at first, but there is a wealth of information in them once you learn to see it (and get your eyeglass prescription updated).

I like the portraits - after awhile, even if you don't who that unfriendly face was, you say to yourself, "Watch out, he's a good one for them," or "Don't worry too much, this guy's a nincompoop."

The latter applies to the Union, mostly, although the South has a few - it seems the South's incompetents are really incompetent.

No electrons were harmed in the previous post. The resemblance of any characters to any persons, living or dead, is highly questionable and best left to the reader's imagination.

Please! don't misunderstand my flippance on my response as being hostile. I
was just being humorous (or trying too, in posts its often difficult to express
your proper intent). Apologies if misunderstood. Also apologies on the map
question. Yes i suppose its the way the map is laid out and the graphics that
I find could have been better but no that is not what a map of the time would
look like (really!). I had been trying to update myself after almost a year off
many of the game boards dealing with an illness and recent surgery (which
now gives me time for alot more game playing! LOL!). No insult to Ageod at
all on this game. It is by far the most researched and complex and most
historical game available for the ACW period. I enjoy it immensly (and will
enjoy it even more when i can reteach myself to play it again! LOL!). I do
look forward to more hours of fun playing this and hope to find my copy of
the Napoleonic version I packed away or i will buy another, its that good!!
:) :D

Yes, but most of the Southern ones can be bypassed with minimal cost. As I said in another thread, I'm new here, but looks to me like there are a few people here I shouldn't respond to...

You got that right. You might be accused of being rude and get reported to Big Sis, or worse you might even find your mug being displayed on a WallMart monitor showing you as the object of a nationwide ManHunt.
