Chain of Command Question

Mon Mar 15, 2010 6:58 am

I bought the game last week and have played the through the tutorials and am now poking around with the West Theater Scenario.

In Henry TN is:

Army of the Tennessee led by 3-star Grant. In his "stack" he has 2-star general G. Dodge. In the same province are 6 divisions; 4 are led by 1-star generals, two are led by 2-star generals, both with better seniority to Dodge.

I wanted to create a Corps so I pulled G. Dodge out of Grant's stack making him a single unit. I then clicked on the Create a Corps button which created a new unit, G. Dodge a Corps of the Army of the Tennessee, so everything seems fine so far. If I add one of the divisions with 2-star generals to the new Corps the commanding officer of the division seems to become the commanding officer of the Corps, the name changes to either JA McClernand or LL Wallace Command. This allows me to then remove G. Dodge and create a second Corps with the same general.

It seems very exploit-y to me that you can use one general to create a Corps then allow someone who couldn't create the Corps take it over so I can create another one with the same general. Is that intentional? Is there something I am missing?

Thanks in advance.

Whether it's intentional or not, you can do it, but it's not an efficient use of your two star generals. Much better to add a talented one star leader to the stack (and from late 62 onwards the Union gets plenty of good quality division commanders), then transfer division command to him, leaving the two star free to be assigned as corps commander. Any two-star can be used to create a corps as long as he doesn't have direct command of a division or brigade, and most two-stars are wasted as division commanders, even the 3-1-1s like Dodge And Lew Wallace. Give them corps command under Grant and see how high those numbers go.

As for McClernand, he should be given a top-level garrison command somewhere like Baltimore or Indianapolis as soon as possible. His ability to recruit extra conscripts each turn is far more useful than anything he can do with a field command. :)

There is no real exploit to do here, as seniority is not used between corps commanders, only for army commanders (although seniority plays a role for all ranks to get a new star).
