Newbie can't merge units

Sat Jan 23, 2010 3:59 am

I'm stuck in the tutorial where I'm instructed to merge three units of the Union Detachment in Ft. Henry with Gen. Prentice (6th Div). When I try to merge the tabs it doesn't work. When I select the 6th Div, press ctrl, and try to select the three units, it doesn't work. If I select the three units of the detachment, I can't then select the 6th Division without then de-selecting the three units and vice versa. I have read the posts dealing with merging units, but nothing works. I can't continue with the game if I don't learn to merge units. Help! :bonk:

I know this is not helping, but it would not work for me either. There is so much to this game, I just figured I would take a "zero" on that and figure it out at a later date.

Joe, I will post in the PBEM string if you want to try it. I have been reading for weeks and I am keep trying the "Coming Fury" and just get whipped because there is so much I do not understand ., YET! But I will get it some day, no way I am every giving up on this incredibly great game. So with that said, because you are 100% new like me.., send me something and we do an PBEM and just screw up together.., you what I mean?

Drag 'n' drop. That's how you merge anything.

For starters, What version of the game do you have installed? The tutorials were reworked in the later versions to account for changes made to the game.

I currently only have access to the tutorial that comes with the latest version of the game (v1.15). This more recent tutorial uses the 5th Division NOT the 6th Division for the merging lesson so there was probably a reason for that change in the tutorial.

I suggest you update to v1.15 and then run the updated tutorial contained in that update version. At least then we will be on the same page for troubleshooting questions.

I installed the patch. I separated Gen. Prentice from the units at Ft. Henry and was then able to merge the detachment into the 6th Division.

I understand merging tabs to merge whole groups. The problem is when merging individual units (i.e. Prentice) within a larger group (i.e. Gen Sherman's Corps); if you select one unit in a group (i.e. Gen Prentice in this case), then when you select the detachment tab to merge with him, it
de-selects Prentice. It seems that you first have to separate Gen. Prentice from Sherman's Corps, merge the detachment with Prentice, and then merge Prentice back with Sherman. Very confusing.

Hi!

Don't select the tab. Just drag Prentice over the desired tab and drop him in. He will get inside the tab stack.
Drag and dropping gets nearly everything done
Cheers!

Here's another merging question from a relatively new player. In v1.07, select one unit, then select another to combine them(with the + button or ctrl-C), and the second gets merged into the first. Now that I've upgraded to v1.15, combining units doesn't seem to work that way. Instead, the two seem to combine under the more powerful unit. Am I understanding this change correctly?

It depends on their force allocations. If you select two units that can't merge, you can see how many elements each unit can hold by mousing over the "merge" button. Two 1-element militia units can always merge, with the second unit selected becoming part of the first. If you have a single infantry regiment and a 2I/1C brigade from MO or IA, any combination of clicking will put the single infantry into the larger brigade (I think those are the brigades that can fit another INF).

Cool, thanks, I have that part understood.

Exactly! That's the example that I'm trying to do, have done in v1.07, and am trying to do in my newly upgraded v.1.15 game. It's not following that rule of merging the 2nd into the 1st unit selected. It does not pay attention to the order in which I select them and instead merges them under the more powerful/less damaged/more upgraded(trained?) militia unit that is farther left in the unit panel. In this example, I've selected the LA Cazadores Espanol(Spanish Hunters) militia first to create an LA badged 2 militia 'mini-brigade' unit with the 1st TN. However, it instead turns it into a TN badged double militia mini brigade. Let me repeat, I selected the LA unit first. I even tried selecting it second. I tried using the ctrl-C keyboard shortcut and then tried again using the + button, but it makes no difference. The merging rule that you quoted me does not seem to be working now. Is it a WAD improvement, or malfunctioning? Maybe your installation is WAD, but mine is not?

Thank you for responding. My apologies if I am missing your point, but it would seem that all militia are the same kind of element with that 'open' element slot capable of being filled with any other militia element. It sounds as if you are saying that the TN one has that open slot, but the LA one doesn't. Or, for that matter others from other states might not have that open slot? In other words, in my example, why isn't the LA militia the equal to the TN in 'open' slot terms? Are some militia designed as 'mergers'(with an open slot) and others as 'mergees?'(without the open slot)

Completely irrelevant, but "48th Alabama Mil." appears twice.

OK, I have figured out the new rules. The game merges the less advanced militia (ie volunteers or militia) into the more advanced militia (ie conscripts or line infantry) regardless of which one is selected first. However, the old merging rule still applies IF the two militia are the same exact type(ie both are volunteers)...then, the second gets merged into the first.

I think we lost tyhe point of Joe's imitial post as I am running into the same problem in 1.15.

In the tutorial you asked to move the KY Volunteers unit, the Nash Arty unit and the 1st Color Bgde to Shermans Corp. That is done easily by drag and drop. The problem then is that the tutorial asks you to merge each of those units into the 6th Division of Shermans Corp and I have not found a way to do that yet. Drag and Drop does not work and I found a post where you highlight the division and the unit you want to merge and use the "+" key, but that does not work either.

How do you merge a bde with a division within a corp?

Ok, found it.

Joe, Within Sherman's Corp are the units including the divisions and the bdes. Click on the 6th division then ctrl click on the KY Volunteer unit you are supposed to merge. A button to the left with a "+" sign will light up. Press this to add the unit to the 6th Division. You can now repeat this with the Nash Arty and the 1st Colored Bde or you can ctrl-click all three and press the highlighted + button.
