New game on hard...a simple question

Fri Mar 28, 2008 7:37 pm

Well, I started my long anticipated game on the hard setting.

I decided that the first few turns would be more or less the same.....

However, It seems as if I may have miscalculated just a little bit on TURN 1 (as CSA).

I took Sumter as usual (and got the batteries).

I took Norfolk as usual.

But I got a butt kicked at Harpers ferry (4 times in a row as I JUST KNEW it was an aberration so I kept restarting).

Just wanted to know if this was normal that early and if so guess I need to cinch up my chinstrap just a hair!!

Also a question on saved games.
It seems that since I have gone to the hard setting and tried to save under a different name that it locks up the game and I have to reboot to load it. (it says something like "Game is locked try agian later").

I have a pretty big computer and all the newest gizmos so that shouldn't be the problem....
any sugestions?

To my knowledge the hard setting simply makes Athena's units fight better and move faster. This may account for your loss at Harper's Ferry.

No, I never win at Harpers Ferry as CSA under hard setting.

The only chance you have to win Harper's ferry siege, early in the game for CSA is if the lone garrison inside is not relieved by aggressive rescue party from the union and thus you may capture it when the garrison surrenders.

If i remember correctly, you can only basically attack it with a single militia then reinforced by a second militia and a leader as both Johnston and Beuregard are fixed in place recruiting.

Hopefully, when you re-did your turn four times in the hope of getting a better result, that you made some changes in the turn. I believe that if you just set your game back one turn and then hit next turn, you will get the exact same results as previously. There is a post from Pocus on this point,I think. I always have a unit make a different move.

This is correct. It was several posts by Pocus, as I was having trouble understanding this point.

Playing as the Union I've found that the only hope for Harpers Ferry garrison is to buy militia replacements on that first turn - sometimes they seem to manage to hold off the attackers.

I ve played lots of 1st turn games with CSA.

Harpers Ferry capture with your Winchester militia is not assured. Perhaps 50% of the games CSA lose the battles and the militia is nearly destroyed, so in case it fails ... on second turn is nearly sure USA holds the city.

On third turn the elite USA troops can arrive and kick the militia.
