My first experience with 1.08....

Fri Dec 28, 2007 4:10 pm

Hadn't played for over a month while waiting for the latest Patch.
I started a new April 81 game as CSA looking for how the Union AI had change/improved. I played on Hard and gave the AI a slight detection advanage. I also play with the Leader Mod.
All things started as usaual with no union in sight until the CSA armys are formed in Richmond and the Valley. I then noticed union probes in Virginia and the west including Texas. Lots of small battles where I am outnumbered almost every time and lose all of them. Much more agressive than before and I like it. One thing i don't get. I by lots of replacements and,of course, fill my units with men during the time they are locked. I can't do this with Johnson because he is stuck in a region south of Winchester so replacement won't flow in to fill out the units in his command. In the past I wait until he is unlocked then move him to Winchester. Only this time, he gets unlocked two turns early because he is attacked. (It seems the Union army doesn't have the same early movement restrictions as CSA as they moved into the valley and attacked my dormant command there. Is this the result of the Hard Setting and some advantage it gives? ) Never the less, I move Johnson in to nearby Winchester so he can begin filling out his troops and form some brigades (no Divisions until October). Winchester immediately comes under seige so no replacements come in. His command has great potential but is stuck at about 2500 men. I try to abandon Winchester and retreat Johnsons command to Charlotsville but he will not move. I assume this is because of the Seige.
Long story short he loses his entire command and he with all his Generals move to Fredricksburg to recoup. Johnson, who is the only general in Virginia with more than one star is now locked for 5 turns and poor Jackson who fought with both hands tied behind his back is blammed for the disaster in the valley and loses seniority. Eventually Fredricksburg is again attacked with Johnson still locked there and he is then moved to Suffolk and is now locked for another 4 turns. Meanwhile General Beauregard is inundated with Yankees and no one to form a Corp with. This 1.08 version is kicking my ass but do the events I described make sence??

Did you use 1.08a? I checked with 1.08a and I saw that Johnston's units were taking replacements while fixed.

That's what you get when you play on hard :)

As I usually play the CSA, I have noticed that the Shenandoah force will take on replacement troops (they start at 30%); you are buying "elite" replacements, right? I buy all four available immediately and even with that the Stonewall troops are S..L..O..W to come up to full strength. :siffle:

I have found that at best they get to around 75%(+/-) for the turn they get released (unlocked); it took another couple turns of monitoring the elite replacements "pigeon hole" and buying more when you are able in order to get them to 100%.

Unfortunately, they tend to be needed for a battle somewhere the turn they are eligible to move, so it's a bit of a crapshoot as to whether you can give Jackson a full-fledged Brigade or not. :p leure:
Oh, and you need some Line Infantry and Field Arty replacements in April before the free ones are available (early May) in order to fill those regulars in the valley too.
