The "Scare" factor

Thu Aug 09, 2007 3:12 pm

I've seen some of you are working on mods and many others are helping the community both with testing and with proposing...the most amazing thing for me to see was to find out the lead dev encouraging the modders to post their work and submit it to the dev team when finalized...this is ...astonishingly remarkable to say the least, especially considering it's full summer!

However, i just got the game...i'm between studying the printed manual (as i write i'm printing the revision 20 for patch 1.05) and playing small scenarios and i'm getting overwhelmed by the information and difficulty of the game (of course, i love it!).

Based on my experience i was skeptic on the fact the AI could really manage such complex procedures to come up with a winning plan.....well, it does!!!! lol

Is any of you working on extra tutorials or new scenarios where n00bs may learn something? The Campaign theaters are quite...scary for a beginner and 2 tutorials for a game of this magnitude seem too few...

I found the demo more helpful than the tutorials. Lord knows I played it at least 20 times waiting for the snail mail to delivery my game disk. :)

GShock:
Do yourself a big favor; if you haven't already, make darn sure to print out or thoroughly read the Tutorial Illustrated Guide in pdf form. I missed out on many of the command nuances simply because I skipped printing out this guide and the illustrations are invaluable.

One of the things I really missed the "rules boat" on was Divisions. :tournepas
Alright, most everyone knows that you can put up to 18 units in a Division right? (I think it's still 18...). And we learned that each unit (or element) has its own command cost of 0-4 CPs. What I missed was the fact that a Division costs 4 CPs, no matter how many units it contains (up to the limit of course!). Digging a bit deeper and playing around with making-up and breaking-down Divisions, etc. shows that it only makes sense to form a Division when you have more than 4 to 5 units in it. Otherwise, you are paying the costs for forming a Division and not reaping the main benefit of reducing the CP costs for large groups of units.
Hope some of this is helpful,

I printed the 1.0 manual, trashed it, and printed the 1.05 rev 20 manual and am enjoying it. (the detail you missed, if i'm not mistaken, derives from a patch which added that cp cost which wasn't there previously)

I see the grand campaign as something to big for me at this stage. I'm enjoying the smaller scenarios a lot and i guess if i was an historian for this theater i could build hundreds of small scale battles...this, coupled with some tutorials would be a big boost to help n00bs like me improving faster :)

I've also noticed the FAQ published by one of the betas (Hobbes) have been replicated into a fine wiki here: http://ageod.nsen.ch/aacwwiki/Main_Page i expect to grow a lot, but, according to me, nothing replaces tutorials. :)

This morning i noticed something strange in the battle for gettisburgh scenario...when the scenario is over i think units do not get replacements anymore. I had the pool FULL of replacements but none of them were being delivered to the units, regardless of stance, being halted or in cities. Can someone confirm if this is a bug or just my n00b factor? :indien:
