Modding a game in progress

Is there a way to mod a game that is in progress (ie. change specific units stats)? I don't want to change the basic files for every game, just specific units in my current game.

I've never tried, but having looked at the game files, it is probably easiest to add experience. Gaining a level adds to an element's stats, so that might be helpful. Other approaches might be possible.
