Breaking siege

Mon May 11, 2015 4:32 pm

i have a force of 1839 power in Cairo. Besieged by a Union force of 1302.
For several turns I try to exit the structure to assault but no matter what I try, I can't attack.
This doesn't seem right. Maybe when the force laying siege would have been much bigger than my force but this?
I'm playing with the latest RC patch and fixed exe.
Since it was a while back I can't remember if this was always the case or not.

One of the errors of the game engine is sieges. If you're in a territory and have greater or = strength and station your troops (those little dots) inside you can get stuck under the right recipe. Permanently I have found... Though your troops are well supplied there and you're safe likely never to lose them, as they will never surrender.

If a force within a siege is greater and more well supplied then it's opponent and the terrain is agreeable, an instant break out if desired should be possible. I often just burn the place down if this happens. You will have to attack and use the sortie out of structure on the same turn to prevent this.

It does not make sense if the Army can fight, which I have seen often happens(gamy 5 combats trying to breakout to learn) then it should be able to run in places. If it cannot, then it's surrounded and cut off from retreat.

Never Station troops inside near a major enemy threat. Entrenchment works quite well outside.

P.S. Attack with an outside force and use the sortie out command on the trapped stack, should work for an assault within a structure but you will have to win or else it may continue.
For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it's still not yet two o'clock on that July afternoon in 1863 ~~~

I can attack them if I manually drag the troops out off the city into the field.
Isn't the "sortie structure" option supposed to do that?

leave them there. With Forrest cutting supply lines, control of the river, and a sizeable force in Indiana, it looks like you may be able to surround and starve them.

The sortie button only serves to order the troops to sortie the city and help another friendly relief force you send from other region. They will wait for the relief force to arrive before doing the sortie.

If there is no relief force coming the Button does nothing and you have to drag them out of the city and into the same region on offensive posture to attack the besiegers.
