I have won 3 games now as USA verse the AI CSA; with each victory I raised the difficulty options expecting a greater challenge without success. As the difficulties increased, I did notice the AI CSA played stronger and pushed harder up the Mississippi River towards St. Louis and pushed harder north in Kentucky; yet in each game the path to take Richmond was easy. (It does seem the AI CSA makes some suicidial pushes North in the winter). It seems that strong CSA blocking forces in the East tend to eventually move out of the way and the battle for Richmond ends up being the only major battle with a 3-1 size ratio in favor of USA. Is this common for the AI CSA to lose Richmond in late 1862 or earlier 1863, or is this just a random AI result in my limited games?

I mentioned this several months ago. Even if you give Athena a lot of advantages (she had a 9k PWR force in Richmond in one of my games), she just doesn't get the concept of defend at all costs. You might load up the CSA in the summer of 1861 for one turn and just move the Confederate capital to Atlanta for her.

I turtle in the East as the Union, and only take advantage of "maneuvers of opportunity" - fighting my first major battle in the East in '63 for Richmond. No battles in Manassas, nothing in the valley, no amphibious landings, etc.
Yet by the summer of '63 I tend to have Richmond totally surrounded, and the CSA will have a 9K stack there and nothing of note nearby.

Ya, the AI tends to have a hard time defending central Va. I tend to think its because the Winchester/HF vp locations tend to draw the AI too far north into the Valley.
Btw, Pocus has made a bit of a call for people willing to play around with "AI agents". These could help script a bit of defence for VA to help overcome some of the AI weakness in this area.

I tend to think the issue Athena has in Virginia is at least twofold, maybe three.
I. The power density in Virginia is far greater than anywhere else. Athena not only has to slip past her Union opponent, but do it so that she has time to accomplish something AND be recovered enough to fight the forces hounding her when they catch up. Not an easy task, especially if the Union is covering his bases well.
II. Short of taking Washington, how much damage can she actually do? Capturing Baltimore or even Pittsburgh are only temporary set-backs for the Union. Once the Union player has organized a force, the Confederate invader has no chance. It's only a matter of time, and once the invaders have been destroyed or driven off and rail lines repaired, the country side will return to it's former serenity as if all were naught but a bad dream. And what cann Athena show for all her efforts and losses?
III. Richmond is like a chain on Athena's leg. She can not leave it far behind until hostilities have ceased. As long as the Union can outnumber the South, out-produce and out-man them, regardless of how successful they are elsewhere, they must always be wary of a sudden invasion from the sea.
So where is the South to be aggressive where it counts for something, other than a bit of excitement for the North?
