LOL! I have had this game for over a year and I never knew you could even attach leaders to units.
Searching the manual I can't find any explicit reference to it, though I can now see it is mentioned in spots, however without any example of HOW to attach a leader to an individual unit.
So I am guessing the reason why you may want to attach a leader to a single unit is to allow any traits that are listed as "This personal ability only applies to the element itself" to at least apply to one unit within a multi-leader force stack.
I am guessing that attaching a leader to unit within a stack of units may increase the risk of losing that leader in a battle? (the fate of the leader being tied somewhat to the fate of the unit)
I am also guessing that the ATTACK-DEFENSE ratings of the leader attached to a unit also offer bonuses to the effective attack and defense values of the unit itself? I am guessing on top of any bonuses the unit may get from the STACK leaders ATTACK-DEFENSE ratings?
If this is the case then I have truly missed out on beefing up my armies in the past and explains why I was getting trounced in PBEMs. It did occur to me how odd it was that unless leader commanded the stack, many of his good leader abilities would go unused. I never really bothered too much with the tab that let you do this as it was always greyed out and thought it was for other games (it only un-greys if two eligible units are selected).
Got to say, it sounds like a neat mechanic.
If you know offhand of a thread where attached leaders gets discussed in detail please post the link. I will nevertheless search the forums for more info.
