What do you think of the new leader portraits?

Fri Sep 20, 2013 5:19 pm

I think the new leader portraits look somewhat cartoonish, and I much prefer the leader portraits in the original ACW, and other Ageod games such as PON. This does break immersion for me.

On the other hand, someone I respect very much loves the new leader portraits.

What do you think?

And, if you contribute to this, please indicate if you are American or European or something else, as I am wondering if a cultural difference may contribute to this.

Thanks,

Vaalen

Depends on the leader. Some were done excellent, some were not. It doesn't break immersion for me (and immersion is important for me), but I respect your opinion, it is perfectly alright.

They're different. My personal preference is the old general portraits. However, I love the new ships/units. I think they are better.

I like them - but maybe a 'bit' to colorful!?

I prefer the old ones. Nathan B. Forrest doesn't scare me anymore.

Edit: After looking at the Graphics/Units in AACW, and in Graphics/Units/Leader Units in CW2, it would seem that a simple switch is possible? Maybe a mod could be made for people wanting the old time feel with the new features?

For me, some of the portraits are very well done, while others are too cartoonish. Also, Many portraits are generic, which does bug me as there are R/L portraits of some if not all of the generic pic leaders. The problem is that the ACW & PoN portraits were excellent.

I like the new portraits, I think they look less cartonish than the old ones... each to there own, I'm sure someone will do a mod...

On a different note I think the land and sea unit portraits are a big improvement over the old ones also :)

I want to thank everyone who responded. This has helped clarify my thinking. The ACW and PON portraits were excellent, and realistic. Those civil war generals looked, grim, determined, harsh, and some, like Nathan Bedford Forrest, were downright scary. Their character came across in the portraits, and I miss that element.

Maybe if enough of us support the issue, we can get the old style portraits back, as Canon suggested. If not, I would welcome such a mod.

I am eager to hear more opinions.

I like most of the portraits, I would quibble with some of the hair colours perhaps, it is much easier to do portraits for this game than previous titles. One decent picture can give you the 3 files you need without too much work, no fiddily frames or such.

And someone who isnt even in the game

For my part, I enjoy the new ones a smidgen more. Both are good, I just like the more realistic look to most of the new ones.

My 2 cents, I am visually challenged. The new graphics are hard to view. They work, but are not crisp and clear like the old graphics. I wish there was a toggle to select which format you prefer.
