Crash during Year of the 4 Emperors scenario

Thu Sep 27, 2012 7:03 pm

Just started a PBEM game. When I load the game an error occurs after a few minutes of playing:

DirectX to Renderer invalid call (Burst Mode) [] Would you like to terminate the application?

Stupid question by the way as it is not possible to continue the game. Log file attached.

That error (Directx burst) is not scenario-specific, it is not even AJE-specific, it has to do with directx 9.0c and it's interaction with your machine. AFAIK there is no sure way to get rid of it, and it tends to be unpredictable, sometimes appearing only when you move the map and/or scroll/zoom.
In your specific case, however, there appears to be something wrong with one of the directx files (d3d8.dll)...

Possible ways to solve this error are:

- update or install directxc 9.0c (via http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35), even (or specially) if you have a new machine. Directx 11/10 retrocompatibility is not perfect and the installation of the full directx 9.0c will not affect in any way your directx 11 programs and will provide all the needed dll files)

- if that does not solve the problem, then try reducing memory usage to 25% in the Options window, System Tab. (You can also try 10% if this don't work)
If it don't work, try reducing maximum texture size. Allways restart after a change.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your reply but no way worked to solve the problem. So far I have only played the Spartacus scenario single player and the 4 Emperors PBEM and the error only occurs in the Emperor scenario. Reducing memory usage and texture size damaged the aje.exe and the game did not start any longer. I had to uninstall and reinstall the game.

I doubt the EXE was damaged, it was more probably a setting that was not compatible with your computer. In this case, editing it by hand can solve the problem. Perhaps here the problem is with winter texture, if it works with a small scenario but not a large one. Send us your general.opt file by PM and we will edit it for you.
