Yellowhammer USA vs Sedgwick CSA

Fri Apr 22, 2011 7:42 pm

Put aside the dissonance of having Yellowhammer (nickname for CSA troops from Alabama) playing as the USA, and Sedgwick (Union General killed near Spotsylvania) playing as the CSA.

Sedgwick and I are playing AACW “1861 The Civil War (April – Full Campaign w/Kentucky)” with Patch 1.15 at default settings including Historical Attrition set to Standard. The House Rule is no Mobilization until 1862.

This PBEM will be Sedgwick's first. My PBEM experience is limited to the 1st AACW Tournament (I got whupped):

This will be my first Full Campaign against a human opponent. FYI here is the AAR of my first full campaign against the AI:

I'm hosting and Sedgwick has returned his first .ORD file. Before I run the turn, here's my approach to this contest. I've read all of Sedgwick's posts to this forum - however, he just started posting recently so there's not much there... IF Sedgwick follows the strategy he describes in this post we may be in for a fun game (what happens if no one invades Kentucky?).

ASSESSMENT

Let’s look at the map and gather intelligence to inform the plans.

The Objective City list names the cities that I must keep or take to win. Each Objective city has an equal value to both sides except that Washington DC is worth 50 points to the USA versus 10 points to the CSA. The USA-controlled Objective cities / points are: Washington DC / 50, Saint Louis MO / 2, Philadelphia PA / 1, New York City NY / 1. The CSA-controlled Objective cities are: Richmond VA / 10, Memphis TN / 2, New Orleans LA / 3, Nashville TN / 3, Atlanta GA / 3, Little Rock AR / 1, Mobile AL / 2, Vicksburg MS / 1, and Charleston SC / 1. Contested cities are Norfolk VA / 1 and Louisville KY / 1.

More than likely, destroying the CSA Army of Northern Virginia and taking Richmond will end the game, but let’s keep going with the Assessment.

The USA starts with Money of $200 on hand plus $189 per turn; 50 Conscript on hand plus 39 per turn; and 50 War Supply plus 129 per turn. The USA starts with the capability to raise Money from: selling War Bonds ($104 to $313); Printing Money ($235); and imposing Taxes ($117 to $376). The USA can Draft Volunteers (139 to 357 Conscript) and Mobilize (536 to 734 Conscript).

The CSA starts with Money of $150 on hand plus $55 per turn; 50 Conscript on hand plus 34 per turn; and 40 War Supply on hand plus 43 per turn. The CSA starts with the capability to raise Money from: selling War Bonds ($97 to $292), Printing Money ($219), and imposing Taxes ($109 to $350). The CSA can Draft Volunteers (154 to 323 Conscript) and Mobilize (462 to 616 Conscript).

These values may change from game to game (I really don’t know), and will certainly change due to Victory Point changes and Industrialization. The values are included to give some perspective on the contributions from each city versus exercising the manpower / financial / economic / political options.

Washington DC is important to the USA not only as an Objective City and a Strategic City and a Depot, it provides $65 and 7 Conscript and 7 War Supply points to the USA per turn (starting values). Saint Louis Depot provides 1 Conscript and 4 War Supply. Norfolk Depot provides 3 War Supply. Philadelphia Depot provides 1 Conscript and 7 War Supply. New York City Depot provides $40 and 7 Conscript and 14 War Supply. Louisville provides 1 War Supply.

For the CSA, Richmond Depot provides 8 Conscript (25% of Conscript per turn) and 5 War Supply (more than 10% of War Supply per turn); Memphis Depot provides 1 War Supply; New Orleans Depot provides $10 (almost 20% of Money per turn) and 2 War Supply; Nashville Depot provides 2 War Supply; Atlanta Depot provides 2 Conscript and 6 War Supply; Little Rock Depot provides 2 Conscript; Mobile Depot provides $4 and 1 War Supply; Vicksburg Depot provides 2 Conscript; and Charleston Depot provides $4 and 2 Conscript and 1 War Supply.

The list of USA Strategic cities includes: Baltimore MD Depot with 1 Conscript and 3 War Supply; Wilmington DE Depot with 1 War Supply; Harrisburg PA Depot with 1 Conscript; Pittsburgh PA Depot with 1 Conscript and 7 War Supply; Harpers Ferry WV Depot with 1 War Supply; Wheeling WV Depot with 1 Conscript and 1 War Supply; Jersey City NJ for some odd reason; Buffalo NY with 5 War Supply; Boston MA with $14 and 4 Conscript and 14 War Supply; Cleveland OH Depot with 4 War Supply; Cincinnati OH Depot with 1 Conscript and 5 War Supply; Detroit MI Depot with 1 War Supply; Bowling Green KY; Indianapolis IN Depot with 1 Conscript and 4 War Supply; Milwaukee WI Depot with 1 Conscript and 3 War Supply; Chicago IL Depot with 3 Conscript and 9 War Supply; Springfield IL Depot with 1 Conscript; Dubuque IA Depot; Fort Leavenworth KS with 1 Conscript; Fort Laramie WY; Denver CO; San Francisco CA Depot with $68 and 1 War Supply; and Tucson AZ.

CSA Strategic cities include: Winchester VA; Charlottesville VA; Fredericksburg VA Depot; Petersburg VA Depot with 2 WS; Raleigh NC Depot with 2 Conscript; Wilmington NC Depot with $5; Camden SC Depot; Savannah GA Depot with $2; Columbus GA Depot with 1 WS; Jacksonville FL Depot with $1; Tallahassee FL Depot with 2 Conscript; Pensacola FL with $2; Montgomery AL with 2 Conscript and 1 WS; Chattanooga TN Depot with 2 Conscript and 2 WS; Lexington KY Depot with 1 Conscript; Corinth MS Depot; Meridian MS Depot; Jackson MS Depot; Baton Rouge LA with 2 Conscript; Fayetteville AR Depot; Galveston TX with $3; and Houston TX Depot with 2 Conscript.

Other interesting USA cities include: Annapolis MD with 1 Conscript and 1 War Supply; Dover DE with 1 Conscript and 1 War Supply; Warren PA Depot; Grafton WV Depot; Trenton NJ with 1 Conscript and 1 War Supply; Albany NY Depot with 1 Conscript and 4 War Supply; Plattsburgh NY Depot; Ironton OH Depot; Dayton OH Depot; Columbus OH Depot with 1 Conscript and 1 War Supply; Lansing MI Depot with 1 Conscript; Vincennes IN Depot; Rock Island IL Depot with 7 War Supply; Quincy IL Depot; Tolono IL Depot with 1 War Supply; Salem IL Depot; Cairo IL Depot; Lexington MO Depot; Des Moines IA Depot with 1 Conscript and 1 War Supply; Council Bluffs IA Depot; and Portland OR Depot.

Interesting CSA cities include: Manassas VA Depot; Garysburg NC Depot; Goldsboro NC Depot; Lexington NC Depot; Augusta GA Depot with 1 WS; Pulaski TN Depot with 2 WS; Knoxville Depot; Madison AR Depot; Fort Smith AR Depot; Rolla MO Depot; and Jefferson City MO Depot with 1 Conscript.

Just for fun, at the start of the game these USA cities have War Supply: Reading PA with 1 WS; Lancaster PA with 3 WS; Allegheny PA with 1 WS; Newark NJ with 2 WS; Brooklyn NY with 3 WS; Rochester NY with 3 WS; and Toledo OH with 1 WS.

For more fun, these CSA cities have Money or War Supply: Suffolk VA with $1; Columbia NC with 1 WS; New Berne NC with $1; Lumberton NC with 3 WS; Athens GA with 4 WS; Macon GA with 4 WS; Berwick LA with $1; and Matagorda TX with $1.

Considering all that information, taking Richmond will still probably win the game. However, knowing for example that Jefferson City MO Depot produces 1 Conscript per turn makes it a tasty morsel if I happen to have some troops nearby.

STRATEGY

My Grand Strategy is to garrison key cities (Objective / Strategic / Depot / Conscript / War Supply), develop successive defensive / logistical lines along rivers, blockade brown water ports and blue water shipping lanes, control the Mississippi River from Cairo IL to New Orleans LA, and attack the Confederate capacity to field armies. In a word, Anaconda.

Since Sedgwick mentioned being paranoid about Anaconda in a post, along with his preference for creating a CSA riverine navy, I will be sure to threaten the Mississippi - I would rather face ironclads than infantry.

Key cities to garrison include USA Objective cities, USA Strategic Cities, and Depots. The starting USA front line is roughly from the Potomac River to the Ohio River to the Missouri River. The USA gets two (2) blockade fleets (Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico). Attacking the CSA capacity to field armies means that I plan to blockade blue water sea lanes, blockade or take money-generating brown water ports, take conscript generating cities, and take cities producing war supply. The CSA can still raise money and conscripts with finance and draft options.

My first Strategic Objective is Richmond – which may end the war. I plan to field and advance two armies: the Army of the Potomac from the north through Fredericksburg and the Army of the James from Fort Monroe up the Peninsula.

1861 CAMPAIGN PLAN

What gets measured gets done.

The PLAN for this campaign year (April 1861 to April 1862): manage three theaters (Potomac River, Ohio River, and Mississippi River) and build three armies (Potomac, James, and Ohio). Command structure is a priority.

Potomac River Line (includes the States of VA, WV, MD, PA, DE, NY, MA): reinforce Fort Monroe VA; garrison key cities; hold the Alexandria VA to Harper’s Ferry WV to Grafton WV (or Pittsburgh PA) to Wheeling WV line; take Manassas VA and Winchester VA. Strongly garrison and build a Fort at Washington DC. Reinforcing Fort Pickens FL is included in the Potomac River plan. Prepare for an advance to the Rappahannock River Line.

Ohio River Line (OH, KY, IN, MI): hold and develop the Ironton OH to Cincinnati OH to Louisville KY to Evansville IN line; garrison key cities; if Kentucky is invaded by the CSA, take Clarksburg KY and Lexington KY. Prepare for an advance to the Cumberland River Line.

Mississippi River Line (IL, WI, MO, IA, KS and the West): hold and develop the Cairo IL to Saint Louis MO to Quincy IL to Des Moines IA to Sioux City IA line; garrison key cities; take Rolla MO and Jefferson City MO. Pacify CSA Indian villages at Cherokee and Creek. Prepare for an advance to the Missouri River Line.

The Naval PLAN is to maintain the Atlantic Blockade; maintain force at Ohio and Mississippi River confluent; maintain force at Hampton Roads; blockade Richmond VA.

The Quartermaster PLAN is to build Depots at along the Potomac / Ohio / Mississippi River front lines and improve supply distribution in the interior (e.g., Fort Pickens FL, Jersey City NJ, Buffalo NY, Boston MA, Fort Laramie WY, Sioux City IA). Maintain rail / river / ocean supply at average to full. Ensure that key garrisons have Supply Wagons to minimize risk of capture (e.g., Fort Pickens FL).

The Economic PLAN is to focus on Industrialization in “safe” states in the East and upper Midwest, with some efforts in other states for General Supply and Ammunition. I like to buy lots of locomotives and riverine transports.

TURN 1 – Early April 1861

No units to move however Butler joins the Fort Monroe garrison and Scott joins the WDC garrison.

Replacements: 1 Elite Infantry, 2 Infantry, 1 Militia, 2 Cavalry, 2 Field Artillery, 1 Heavy Artillery, 2 Supply Wagon, and 1 Engineer.

IIRC buying the Militia replacements helps defend Harper's Ferry because the replacements show up before the combat phase.

Economics: 30 Locomotives and 10 Riverine Transports. Light Industrialization in NY and MD.

I’ll wait until I need money and conscripts before choosing those options.

My (end of turn) planned balance is now 95 Money, 17 Conscripts, and 26 WS.

TURN 2 - Late April 1861

USA NM = 87
CSA NM = 99
Foreign Help = 1
USA Combat losses = 30
CSA Combat losses = 90
USA VP = 85
CSA VP = 10
USA VP per turn = 36
CSA VP per turn = 38

Good results from Industrialization:
Brooklyn NY = +24 GS
NYC NY = +21 GS, +8 Ammo, +2 WS
Baltimore MD = +6 Ammo

CSA Exceptional Taxes, 8% War Bonds, Call for Volunteers.

Battle of Fort Sumter – Union Defeat
USA 45 men, 3 cannon vs CSA 5016 men, 1856 horses, 24 cannon
USA loss 30 men, 2 cannon vs CSA loss 92 men, 92 horses

Sedgwick sent all available troops from Charleston to Fort Sumter (Bartow BDE, 1 SC BDE, 1 GA Cav, GA Arty, Supply #IV).

Ships at Norfolk ordered to Baltimore.
Schurz Cavalry regiment ordered to rail to Harper’s Ferry (16 days).
Virginia secedes.

Since I can’t buy reinforcements, I don’t need to draft or raise money yet. If my NM rises so does the number of conscripts (e.g., Call for Vols = 147 now vs 137 last turn) and amount of money I hope to get when I choose those options.

Replacements: 2 Infantry, 1 Light Infantry, 1 Supply.

Economics: 30 Locomotives (currently average) and 20 Riverine Transport (currently very limited). Industrialize PA, NJ, DE (turn off NY and MD).

My planned balance is now 140 Money, 91 Conscripts, and 130 WS. I’m saving up for buying units.

2 questions:

Will you be posting pictures later on (when more is happening)?

What do you mean "pacify" the Indian villages?
Remember - The beatings will continue until morale improves.

TURN 4 – Late May 1861

USA NM = 87
CSA NM = 99
Foreign Help = 13
USA Combat losses = 180
CSA Combat losses = 120
USA VP = 170
CSA VP = 96
USA VP per turn = 35
CSA VP per turn = 50

Industrialization: zilch (plus somehow I overcommitted money last turn and the DE industrialization turned off).

Blockade strongly displeases the British +13 foreign help.
CSA prints Paper Money.

7th and 8th NY Militia to Frederick MD (plus Humphreys)
1st and 2nd PA Militia to Chambers MD (plus Howe)
1st and 2nd MA Militia to Montgomery MD (plus Griffin)
These forces are building a wall (well, more like a speedbump) between WDC and Harper’s Ferry. The CSA would have to attack across the Potomac River against entrenched troops. My intent is to deter casual raids plus the forces will increase loyalty in those areas of Maryland.

Stationing Recruiting Officer Banks in NYC adds 7 conscripts per turn.
OH Gunboat Squadron ordered to Cape Girardeau
St Louis Massacre (Lyon!)
North Carolina secedes
Patterson force ordered to Grafton
Milroy to Grafton
Schurz cavalry ordered to recon Culpeper VA
Shields, Morell, McCall to Cincinnati

Where is the CSA Army of the Shenandoah?

Replacements: 1 Army HQ, 2 Infantry, 1 Skirmisher, 1 Cavalry, 1 Light Arty, 2 Supply Train, 1 Service Asset

Economics: industrialize MI and WI. Locomotives 20 and Riverine Transport 20.

USA Combat losses = 841
CSA Combat losses = 300
USA VP = 247
CSA VP = 200
USA VP per turn = 38
CSA VP per turn = 51

Ouch! Schurz found the CSA Army of Shenandoah…

Thayer and Schenk BDEs at Cincinnati OH
Gallagher’s BDE to Harper’s Ferry WV
USA captured Creek IT, 3rd US Cavalry will destroy the structure then predictably move to Cherokee IT
Sumner and 11th US Infantry to St Louis MO
1 USMC to Alexandria (AotP)

Battle of Strasburg Depot VA – Union Defeat
USA 601 men 600 horses vs CSA 9165 men 3312 horses 40 cannons

Dahlgren and Monitor to Hampton Roads
French’s BDE to Baltimore (Fort Monroe)
Bartlett’s BDE to Baltimore (Fort Pickens)

Battle of Rolla MO – Union Victory
USA 2809 men 636 horses 12 cannon vs CSA 480 men

USA captured Rolla MO
1st and 2nd MI Militia to Detroit MI

Gulf Squadron to Philadelphia PA
Heintzelman to Pittsburgh PA
Mansfield PWR 144 conservative assault Whiting PWR 15 at Manassas
McDowell Army of Northern Virginia (PWR 368) with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Divisions to Manassas (6 days)
Hamilton with Miles 5th Division at Alexandria
Runyon and 4th Division to WDC
Sam Houston’s fight against secession (2 Cav regiments at Dallas, USA Objective until end of year)
Western Volunteers conservative assault Jefferson City MO (Militia PWR 8)
Lots of tidying up – the Union garrisons showed up this turn; some I keep in the cities (Depots) and some outside. Merged the NY and NE Squadrons at Hampton Roads then sent extra ships to Baltimore; Dahlgren will command the force at Hampton Roads.
Chesapeake Scouting Squadron to recon Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg VA.

CSA Gustavus Smith is at Summers WV (east of Grafton) with unknown force. I’ve got forces at Grafton, Wheeling, and Pittsburgh.

Politics: Total Blockade +$50K, +15 VP, +1 NM
Finance: Exceptional taxes +$610K
Drafts: Call for Volunteers with $1K bounty +291 conscripts

Replacements: 3 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, 2 Light Arty, 2 Supply Train, 1 Naval Engineer

Reinforcements:
KS I/M BDE (KS)
IA 2I/C BDE (Fort Laramie)
MO 2I/C BDE (Rolla MO)
ME 2I/A BDE (reserve coastal raider)
2 NY 2I/A BDE (Monroe and Pickens)
2 OH 2I/A BDE (OH)
MI 2I/C BDE (OH)
MI 2I/A BDE (OH)
CT, NY, PA 10# Arty (Potomac line)

2 MO Riverine Transport (Sioux City Depot and Jeff City Depot)
NY Cavalry (Schurz)
Economics: Locomotives 40 and Riverine Transport 5. Continue hoping for WI and MI industrialization plus IA and OH.

Kentucky is still a black hole...

I feel a need for a coastal raid. Is it gamey to ride ships to a coast then use rivers to attack inland?

In the West, Sedgwick seems to be following the plan he described in his CSA strategy post - scorched earth in Missouri (he's destroying his depots) and defend Arkansas. Since I don't plan to develop the Missouri River line until next year this works for me plus it may limit any deep raids. I'll try to scorch some earth in his backyard...

I don't know what to do about the Midwest. Kentucky is just sitting there. I don't plan to violate neutrality and Sedgwick doesn't either. I'm guessing that Kentucky eventually turns USA or CSA, doesn't it??? I have an embryonic Army of the Ohio building at Cincinatti.

In the east I got a little thumping. I'm outnumbered by the CSA in maneuver forces. I don't know what to expect from Sedgwick, but I think my defense can bend to it, so I'm executing my plan without change.

The Army of Ohio will relocate away from the border (next turn) so as not to worry the Kentuckians - the only units on the border will be fixed units. KY will join the Union in Nov 1861 unless something happens...

TURN 8 – Late July 1861

USA NM = 91
CSA NM = 99
Foreign Help = 1
Prisoners of War CSA 400
USA Combat losses = 3646
CSA Combat losses = 2281
USA VP = 338
CSA VP = 225
USA VP per turn = 38
CSA VP per turn = 51

No real battles, but Sedgwick’s Mississippi Fleet knocked Foote into Cairo. Also, a half-dead bunch of Missouri militia took Quincy IL.

Messages:
Creek village pacified
2nd NY Cavalry to Baltimore MD
2nd PA Cavalry to Chambers MD (Potomac line)
Dana’s MI BDE to Columbus OH
Vandever’s IA BDE to Quincy IL
Ocean Transport Squadron (with Gulf Squadron and other ships) from Boston to Baltimore (Pickens Depot)
Dietzler’s KS BDE to Fort Smith KS
USA liberated Springfield MO

Dispositions:
Blenker to Wheeling WV
Asboth to Lexington MO
1st PA BDE (the one that starts out unsupplied in Franklin PA – I forgot to send it a supply wagon) to Baltimore
3rd US Cavalry ordered to destroy Cherokee IT then recon Pleasant IT (west of Fayetteville AR)
Shield’s force from Ironton OH to Columbus OH
Morell’s force from Cincinnati OH to Dayton OH
IN Volunteers from New Albany IN to Indianapolis IN
1st NY Cavalry to Frederick MD (Potomac line)
1st CT Cavalry to Montgomery MD (Potomac line)
WV force to Wheeling
Tidying up Grafton forces (escorting Supply wagons to Pittsburgh and Alexandria)
Lyon to conservative attack Militia at Springfield
4th US Cavalry to recon Englewood IT (just west of Fort Smith AR – close enough to peek but doesn’t trigger militia)
Foote ordered to try to sneak to St Louis MO

BTW I will try to avoid triggering Militia reinforcements by violating State lines, unless the benefits to me outweigh the units Sedgwick receives. Although, note that Sedgwick took Quincy IL but didn’t trigger reinforcements (I would’ve liked a couple of Militia and some Cavalry and maybe even Artillery).

Intel:
CSA Sibley is sitting on Dallas with Cavalry and Rangers but hasn’t ‘taken’ the city.
CSA Smith and Zollicoffer (PWR 165) are south of Grafton WV – Milroy and Heintzelman are in Level 3 trenches with PWR 300.
CSA Johnston at Harper’s Ferry
CSA Bory at Manassas getting stronger
CSA Ruggles at Fredericksburg VA
CSA Magruder at James City VA
CSA Huger at Suffolk VA

Replacements: 1 Cavalry, 2 Supply Train

Reinforcements: CT Sharpshooter (for Cali BDE if it doesn’t replace on its own, else AoNV)

Economics: industrialization OH and DE. Excess rail and river.

Little Mac is almost at Baltimore. Reinforcements for the east will be ready soon. I should be able to knock CSA Beauregard out of Manassas in early September (satisfying the Immediate Offensive), as long as Sedgwick doesn’t garrison troops –inside- Manassas.

FYI, in earlier versions, pacification didn't remove the Indian units. They just spawned somewhere else.

Good luck.

Jim-NC - thanks. I know that Stand Watie and his friends (and then their friends and their friends) will still show up, but they can't shelter in Creeks anymore. It's a morale boost for me (personally) and it bothered Sedgwick enough to send 4 cavalry regiments (which aren't causing trouble elsewhere)...

Reinforcements:
CT Supply Wagon (WDC fort)

McClellan and friends are bringing PWR 1000 to join McDowell (PWR 450) at Alexandria (committing almost every unlocked unit in the theater) for a push against CSA Beauregard (PWR 900) at Manassas. Unfortunately the command penalties are outrageous for that mob. Pushing Bory out of Manassas (on schedule) will be tough.

Shields MI force (PWR 100) plus Blenkers WV force (PWR 100) are joining Milroy (PWR 300) at Grafton for a push against CSA Smith (PWR 200) at Beverly WV

The question becomes, what will Johnston do?

You might want to try 75% reduction. I usually use no reduction, but cut off the end of the picture (using paint) to make it fit.

I must say I love "secret force ordered to secret location". Good luck with your secret forces. May they catch the enemy unawares.

I was thinking that Sedgwick might invade Kentucky since there’s no upside for him not to (maybe his Partisan Ohio excursion showed him I wasn’t going to invade). I have 3 almost-divisions in the Midwest (soon-to-be at Cairo, Louisville, and Ironton). The only cities I care about west of the Appalachians right now are the objective cities Louisville and St Louis, plus Cairo. Those three cities will become my festungs out west – eventually each will be defended by a fort and a division.

I would care about San Francisco because of the money, but it is far, far away. I wouldn’t mind if Sedgwick tried to take it so I wouldn’t have to face whatever force he sent in a place that matters.

I need to try to pick off CSA Johnston’s force at Harpers Ferry – while I hate to attack across a river I don’t have much choice. McDowell and friends may try it next turn. I am concerned that McClellan isn’t strong enough at Manassas to take on Bory, Johnston, and Smith if Sedgwick decides to go on the offensive, but coordinating those forces would be difficult.

I’m also buying some non-secret reinforcements, but in the interest of overall secrecy I can’t identify those units just now.

Jim-NC - I'm pleased that you're reading this AAR; I've read your posts on the tournament thread.

That's due to the 1 round invasion delay. If you move any forces in KY after the other side declares an invasion, you lose massive amounts of cohesion. The penalty is lift the turn after the invasion. You can't even build in KY without the problem.

Your forces will regain their cohesion slowly now that the penalty is lifted, but it hurts a lot in the beginning.

Not a great turn for the USA, but not too unexpected (however I didn't expect the river combat between troops). I knew to expect some loss of cohesion, but Morell dropped to almost nothing - plus it makes him slow to move (his force is resting at Cincinnati and I would have moved him back more if I could). Everything is on schedule for my secret operation.
