Ok, I've read, I've looked, I've read... Rivers....

I would like to know how you know you have control of a river? I have yet to see it. Is it when you have no fog of war on it, or if you own all the territories it touches? (I fully admit I might have just missed it somewhere).

Also, I guess there is no way to look under the hood and see how the river is pushing supply?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

* Some algorithms are not 'visible'. Supply flow is not displayed, although, with some patience and eyeballs, you can infer how things are going. The Supply map filter is invaluable for this.

* Rivers, rivers...without looking things up, AFAIK, if you have a garrisoned Fort or an entrenched 5+ position on the river, that cuts Supply to hostile forces.

* But rivers are tricky. I hate to say it, but... I think Athena cheats sometimes. I swear I've seen CSA forces merrily swimming upstream on ice floes that my six Ironclad, four Gunboat, two TP Fleet under Porter can't interdict because it's Frozen.

* Still, the best way to argue about things is to put a fleet there. Even then, the oppo may Evade. The best results I've seen are 'sealing' shores against river crossings by undesirables.

I'm actually more worried about my supply being pushed through the river. I'm not really worried about cuting the AI's supply. I can usually figure that out by getting some recon on his forces.

Thanks for the replies.

IIRC, you don't control it. You can pass through it, and block it. This is why ships can pass each other on defensive posture, and not start a battle. You can't do that on land (someone almost always switches to offensive posture).

So, basically, if I want supply to go through the river, I need all the strongpoints and no large forces on a terroritory attached to a river where he can shoot.

Yep - check out the Entrenchment level of nasty types on shores - 5+, IIRC, to block Supply.

Why Fort Donelson is so important. And #10.
